the purpose of this post is to measure interest in a group buy for catz amber xlo fog lamp kits... i have all the lamps i need for the rest of my useful life and will not being ordering anymore for personal use... however... since i know the catz guy... i can be the point man for brokering a group buy deal...

at this point all i can say is he has the catz amber xlo fog lamp kits listed on his ebay site for $85... i dont know if we can do better than that... but if i approach him with a quantity deal... then we will know our best deal...

a little catz history...

i gotts these these catz amber xlo fog lamp kits on the bugeye motorbick and the midwest motobrick...

i had not heard of catz lights until i read about some dude named ted verrill write about some ironbutter dude named karl rosenbaum who used catz lights on a 94k1100lt...

i was intrigued so the search was on... i quickly figured out that catz are the number tuner car aftermarket lights in japan... why not piaa... well... piaa was a small outfit who got toyota money to go mainstream... they got their product dot approved and set out to drive catz out of business... they almost succeeded... but to this day catz is still number one with the tuner crowd because catz are simply the best aftermarket tuner car lights...

when catz decided to forego dot approval for its line of tuner car lights... catz usa went out of business as the official importer... however i tracked down the guy who was catz usa and found that he was still selling catz to the turner car crowd... he has quite the following in tuner car circles... he also has an ebay presence...

he was very helpful... he sent me all kinds of photos and sizes and data about reflectors and bulbs and lenses and stuff... i was hooked on the stuff but i was not in need because i had the giant piaas... then when the bugeye motobrick got buglered... i was in need and restarted dialogue with the catz dude...

we decided the amber xlo lamps would give me good coverage in the fog and the acid orange color would catch the eye of the distracted cell phone minivan drivers... which would make me appear unique and highly conspicuous on the road... and furthermore the cut off style beam pattern would not get into the eyes of oncoming traffic or leading traffic... by both day and by night...

i run the amber xlo lamps 24/7... what i hear from other riders is that they can see me in their mirrors from long distances... that my conspicuousness is the best they have seen because of the brightness and the color...

i gotts the bugs on the rbr bar... the midwest motobrick needed some xlo amber lapms... i figured out a simple mount... i got them on... and thought some of you folks may want to try the clean install and the unique conspicuity... not because you want to be like me... but because its easy and inexpensive...

here is the bug with the catz xlo ambers...

here is the clean install on the midwest motobrick...

shows mounting and condensate drain hole...

shows mounting... and you have to take out these screws and turn lens upside down so the condensation hole is at the bottom and the cut off reflector is at the top...

i swapped the fender bolt with a .25 x 3.5 bolt and tightened it down to the fork with a nylock...

i screwed another nylock onto the bolt for the light to be tightened against it...

i slid a lock washer next to the nylock and slid the lamp onto the bolt...

i slid a lock washer onto the bolt and screwed a nubbin nut onto the bolt...

i tightened the nubbin bolt which tightened the lamp against the nylock...

these lamps are vented... the vents throw color on the ground... the vents keep the heat down to extend the life of the bulb...

proper machine bolts... washers... nuts... would be better... but i got what they had... its rural iowa you know...

i run these lights day and night... at night the beam stays low to the ground... they do not shine in the eyes of the cagers... they are bright but do not offend anyone...

these are not deer locators... it is my opinion that these are the perfect economy motobrick conspicuity lights... and the fender bolt mounting is so clean its the biggest no brainer in the history of motobricks...

so...

if you are interested in a group buy... please reply to this thread with your thoughts...

I'm interested - if the price is right. Since I already have the Motolights low, I'll work on figuring out a mount below the headlight. I don't like the mirror mounts on the LT.

Jim, Below the headlight mount is trivial. There is a removable plastic part that makes the install very easy. Here's what mine looks like

Johnny,
That is a very nice setup. I'm tempted. I may sign up depending on the $$ you can negotiate

The LT front half of the fender mounts the same as on the RS but there's no reflector as those are stuck to the rear half of the fender. I sse no reason why the JO method won't work just fine on an LT. That's what I plan on doing with these on my LT.

Not gonna find much cheaper than these lights mate.

My motolites used were 150 and bulbs 10 each.

The point of lights like this isn't to provide light, it's to make the bike more visible to cars in the daytime. It makes a very noticeable difference when you add aux lights - especially on K bikes since there's a very distinct cut-off on the low beam.

The nice thing about these (aside from being easy to mount like Johnny did) is that the color of them really sticks out in traffic.

Even putting a cheapo set of Wal-Mart fog lights under the headlight makes a big difference:

rodger that...

just a side note...

the wiring harness is for a car... so one set of wires is much longer that the other set... and the harness insulation is white....

what i did was cut off some of the harness insulation until i got a good length on both lamps... then i pulled the extra wire uo through the harness insulation making the harness tight and uniform against the top of the fender...

i ran the harness up the brake line and coiled the spare wire i pulled through the harness insulation and secured it with wire ties... it was just too cold to try to cut and solder the wires... but the coil is only about a foot of wire so its not like a spaghetti bowl and its hidden under the tank and faring...

the wiring is straight forward from there... the switch is technically not waterproof but i have not had any problems with the 2 switches on the bugeye motobrick... i figured you geezers would want your own fancy switch anyway...

i ended up getting some black spray paint made for flexible plastic... i painted the harness black... i never understood why auxiliary light harnesses are always white...

just wanted you to know...

I buy 3 foot setions of black heat shrink tubing and run wires through that. I don't bother to heat shirnk it thuogh. It provides some addtional protection tpo like the factory tubing on wiring.
