Hello quadrabrick anb ALL !

Well this is my firs post (introduction later, tomorrow early skiing Cool ).
The part number is: 17111460716 designed for following bikes it is a part no 2 on this drawing.
I suggest to find genuine part heat management in K's 11's engine is quite precise one and heat load is significant. Some BMW dealers will ship parts with no problem, or ask at BMW car dealer, they should be able to get it. Well at least it works in my place.

Best regards

Does anyone know what would happen if we didn't use a thermostat? In a car they are handy for running the heater sooner but since I don't have a heater on my brick I was wondering what good it did? I realize it heats the engine up sooner so is the only reason it is there is to get to operating temperature sooner?
Thanks!

Hello!

I can assure you that majority of thermostats in cars control the engine temperature not heaters. Heater control is made by additional one.
A main thermostat controls the amount of cooling liquid going through the radiator. Usually it opens at 80-90 Celsius degrees. If you ride in cold climate there is a chance that the engine would be constant underheated and the fuel consumption will be higher then normal.

Jack - what Rafal said. The engine is designed to operate in a certain temperature range - newer vehicles run around 200 - 210 degrees F or so - as far as I know. If you take the thermostat out, the engine won't operate in the proper temperature range - if it even reaches operating temp.

In addition to thermostats, most large trucks have shutters to reduce air flow across the radiator. Old Volvos had shutters controlled from the cabin by a chain. The thermostat isn't about the cabin heater - it's about the engine.

in the fuel injected engines temp control is important . ( note for Diesel it is critical)
the ideal temp is 100 F over the ambient air temp. so in real world issues the engine would never get up to operational temp. summer and traffic excluded.

what i take issue with is the design of the thermostat. i feel that even wide open it is still restrictive. i would like to see a design more like a gate valve that when fully open is non restrictive. heavy trucks have a sleve style that when open is almost non restrictive. the stopper will retract into the block . (temp control to actuate the valve coms from the oil temp)
to complex for gas engine.
