As I struggle to get my riding boots on, I think of the days ride ahead. I have made this ride many times, the excitement I feel shouldn't be a surprise to me. Time seems to fly and I know my rides are no longer limitless. Though I have many yet to come, each seems more precious then the last. I think of long lost friends I shared many an adventure with on the back roads and highways. I can still see Bill riding by the house standing on the seat of his Harley flathead. I wanted to be just like Bill when I grew up. Well Bill is gone and I’m grown up, I still can’t stand on the seat of any bike and ride it. Sally rode a Cushman Eagle and was the hottest girl in the world. Sadly she became civilized, got married, had kids and never rode again. Why do we have to grow up anyway? I did get my boots on and my K1100 stands ready . Maybe I’ll get passed by the young lady on the Suzuki 650 or the guy on the 900 whatever Duck. Dam, I can’t wait I’m the luckiest guy in the world. _________________ 1995 K1100rs

Yes, we are so lucky to share this riding experience of ours.
And yet, on the other hand, our individual helmet time is so private even we ourselves struggle to verbalize it.
Thank you for the beautiful story. _________________ "Things are not as they seem, nor are they otherwise." - Buddha |

I was gearing up for the ride home from work tonight... It was about 42 degrees out, and switching between drizzle and steady rain. I live about an hour from work.
People kept stopping by my cubicle to say they were sorry I had to ride home in the rain, how they felt bad for me, and I just couldn't explain that I felt bad for THEM, for not understanding why I would get all geared up and plug in my toasty, warm heated jacket and grips and sit inside my little waterproof, warm cocoon and haul ass home.
I guess that if you don't get it, you don't get it. _________________ 1993 K1100RS

I had the same experience Saturday afternoon. 42deg, rain, drizzle, about an hour ride to our local ABATE district meeting, I was the only one on a bike.
All the hardly riders were in their CARS and TRUCKS.

EXACTLY!
Think that most people assume that rain is the same as liquid grease.
And some see the bike outside my office these days (temps still below 32F when I ride there) and ask "did you ride here this morning?" I feel like saying- NO, I was here and this motorcycle just fell out of the sky, and BTW, "here's your sign"
Some of the best rides I have been on are in miserable conditions but with the right equipment (you don't snow ski in a bathing suit, do you???) it can be a great day.
But you are right, some people just don't get it- especially if they have never been on a bike. _________________ John & Cathy

Tomorrow I ride. I will seek to acheive "The Immovable Mind"
To be everywhere and nowhere at once.
Of Potholes and Bends: A Meditation on Psychoanalysis and Motorcycle Riding by Carlo Strenger, Ph.D.
Psychoanalysis has recently turned attention to the importance of the patient's developing a sense of the future. Yet many patients cannot envisage a rich and worthwhile future, because their attention is focused on the dangers, real or imagined. This scenario is analogous to difficulties motorcyclists have in detaching their gaze from sources of danger and developing depth of vision. The author relates some experiences he has had in being coached in motorcycle riding and demonstrates their relevance to psychoanalytic processes. It is shown that both in motorcycling and in life, it is important to keep focus of vision on one's long-term goals while being aware of dangers in peripheral vision. The development of harmonious movement is shown to be a function of a combination of maternal care and paternal guidance in life as in riding motorcycles.
The entire paper is a good read BTW. _________________ "Things are not as they seem, nor are they otherwise." - Buddha |

Me, I live in a simple world. For me it's about being able to go fast and trying not to get hit by cars. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

|
|
well i guess ime a bit of a sucker for what is simple...and definately a sucker for freedom...maybe thats why i like... the campfire...the tent...the motorbike...the sun moon and the stars...simple good food and trusty companions. Already sounds complex but not really if thats all there is. There is so much i dont need.
I mean IMHO life is simple...and when its not...its inevitably because i have strayed from simplicity.
Take freedom...simply the absence of oughts and shoulds...allowing us to decide what we want to experience. When we take full responsibility...we can accept the consequences fully...and probably experience total freedom. Its the experience of freedom which is so sustaining and exciting.
Our biking experience is simply the choice of a fuller experience of freedom...maybe.
Take speed...always relative...usually heavily regulated...but requiring high skill to attain and survive. In short, in order to experience speed, you need, the freedom to choose, the locations and assess the relative risks, together with the ability to manage the odds of crashing or being crashed into.
This makes speed an exercise of freedom and the opportunity to experience the exhilaration that accompanies freedom.
Thanks folks for the opportunity to safely ramble down the metaphorical road that we call language.
Wishing you all safe rides, great freedom, elegant simplicity and joy |
