|
|
Getting ready to swap out my 33amp for a 50amp and have reviewed the info I could find on the net but need some clarification on how to wire the 50 amp.
Can I wire the output straight from the alternator to the starter using my own wire and not the OEM wire?
Can I do the same with the small wire (field something??), or does that have to go somewhere else before it gets the starter. And does the small wire from the bike side connect to the small post next to the the big 8mm post?
My goal is to just leave the OEM wiring bundle alone so I can put the 33amp back in if I sell the bike with out the PIAA's.
The other question I guess I have is how do you know if the rubber bumbers are bad and should be replaced?
Thanks,

Who gives a rip about bringing the bike back to stock? If you sell it just jack the price up by what you paid for the 50A alt and you break even.
Monkey nutz(those rubber bushings): If they look worn then they probably are. Again, if you have to buy new ones then just jack the price up by that amount and break even.
Wiring:
Get a ring terminal and connect the blue wire to the smaller post on the 50A alternator.
Wire a good sized lead (at least 12 gauge) from the positive battery terminal to the larger post on the 50A alternator. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Agreed. Having taken the alt out of mine to service it and check the "monkey nuts" I can tell you that it aint worth the trouble to put the old one back in for "stock" status.
If you sell and the buyer want's it "that stock" give em the smaller alt and let them change it. _________________ Ride safe.

What 50A alternator are you using? If you're using one from an R bike then you'll need to get the drive cup for the 50A alt on a K. You can't swap in the one from your 32A alt as they are slightly different. About $15 - part number 12312305329 _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I've wondered the same thing. Why don't you try it and let us know if it works? _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Back to monkey nutz: If they're worn, they'll tell you. (They start to make noise.) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Monkey nutz are almost always in need of replacing if they are original - they are cheap and easy to replace (as always, spit makes a great lube ). When I did mine on my K75S some years ago they had the consistency of mud and the fins on the cup were chipped and cracked. _________________

Local dealer says he has never done it but sees no reason why an alternator from a k1200 won't work. Guess I will be the tester and pick one up on Fleabay. There are quite a few to choose from and a bunch of them under $50 buy it now.

Jeff, the 60amp K1200 alternator will not work. It is physically larger and will not fit the K75/100/1100 intermediate flange. _________________ Larry

Larry,
Thanks for the heads up on the 60A alternator. Would have been money down the drain. Going to scout for a 50A.

Picked up a 50A from an R bike on Fleabay for $29.99 plus the $15 for the housing. Don't feel to bad about the deal. waiting on the monkey nutz and housing from Chicago BMW. _________________ 1993 K1100LT
