I have noticed that when I get up above 65mph I can really hear the finaldrive. It is definately a mechanical sound, what I will refer to as a "whirring" noise. It does not sound as if there is anything loose or "grinding" and if not for my newbie-ultrasensitive hearing I may not even have noticed it.
I do not know if this is normal. The noise is almost imperceptible below 65.
Any thoughts? |

Yeah - you need to install a Remus or Staintune exhaust
I've never heard any noise from the final drive. What color is the gear oil when you change it? If it's not coming out close to the same color it went in, something is being eaten up in there... _________________ Jim

Just a thought,
Could it be your rear tire (or tyre) whining?
If it IS something in the final drive, can you hear it with the bike on the center stand?
'Twas a lonely one, but a thought nonetheless... _________________ '02 - GL1800

What they both said, check on the center stand and then check the oil.

Wear ear plugs. They protect your hearing and reduce paranoia. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

The morning before my U-joint bought the farm, I noticed a horrible grinding sound, but wasn't wearing my ear plugs, the gang all said, put your ear plugs back in! _________________ Steve

I have not drained the fluid and as I just bought the bike have no idea what color it was when it went in. I plan on doing th efluid tomorrow after getting some tonight. Does everyone agree 75/90 is what to use?
Do you think that since I only hear it at high speeds (70mph) that it is ok to try to simulate that on the centerstand?
Right or wrong I have always felt that any type of "freewheeling" is unnacepptable for something that typically experiences a force of resistance.
Thanks Duck, I just ordered earplugs from Chicago BMW, I should have them sometime towards the end of July... |

The plug is magnetic. Check for large hunks of ferrous material clinging to it.
The color of the oil is usually amber in nature about the color of honey. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

You can pick some basic foam earplugs from any hardware store or any motorcycle shop ought to have some Hearo's. I don't leave home without them, or my Koss earbud headphones for my MP3, but something to block the wind roar (and u-joint grind ) _________________ Steve

You should try the JVC Marshmallow earbuds - about $16/pair at Wal-Mart. They sound just as good but seem to fit a little deeper in the ear(mine anyhow) and are more durable. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

You humor wasn't lost on me.
If I were you I would look at the final drive fluid ASAP- if there is any...
The noise could also be coming from the driveshaft U-joint- ask Steve (skdonlan) about a failure there.

Since you brought it up, I've been wanting to point out a simple test/sign that a U-joint is on it's way out.
With the bike up on the center stand, rotate the rear wheel by hand and listen. For awhile I'd been able to hear a slight clunk, clink, clunk, clink that didn't sound awful, I just assumed that was the U-joints just doing their rotating thing. I now know that was the beginning of the end of my forward U-joint. With the new one installed, there is no sound what so ever coming from the drive shaft, or rear end when rotated by hand. I'll be checking mine regularly from now on.
Thanks for the head phone tip Duck, I'm always on the lookout for comfy headphones that I can wear under my helmet. For that price, I'll check out a pair. _________________ Steve
