Even though I bought the LT version (the 40 min test ride on the RS made my shoulders hurt for three days), I have to agree. The K1100RS is one great looking bike.

I got lucky, someone put a different bar (I think from a K75) on the one I picked up. You sit alittle higher and have to move around a little to peek at the mirrors but the position is great and I've had that thing on some long trips. Have the orginial bar, but I think I would encounter the same problems you had. If you look at my post records you can maybe find a picture.
Really like that all black RS.
