I only have one key for my K11LT. How do I go about getting another one made? Do I need to order a blank one from the parts fiche and then have it duplicated at my local hardware store??

If you don't have to have the folding one, any good locksmith should have a blank.

Hello!

This is one of possible solutions. You can try go directly to keys service point and ask if they have blank one - some time they have. If you order from oem part, then take into mind that there are 3 or 4 kinds of key: regular full metal, small without hinge, small hinged and big one, hinged with led light (I had one of that kind with my K75S '86) - but as far as I know it is out of production now.

Best regards,

The Duck may know better, but my experience has been that there aren't regular blanks for the keys; they're steel.

Even if you get the blanks from a dealer, not all locksmiths will cut them.

I hope I'm wrong...

Hi, Stu,
Larry is correct. I live in El Paso, the other side of the city from Larry, and have dealt with one locksmith for many years. I obtained 2 blanks - 1 normal and 1 hinged - from Capital Cycle (OEM steel blanks) and, before they arrived, talked with the locksmith. He said he would not cut the keys because they were steel. While visiting my daughter in Dallas, I took the folding key into a locksmith shop - one I'd never been to in my life - and asked if he could cut the key. He immediately set it up, cut it, and gave both keys back to me. He charged me $1. Both keys work perfectly.

Through a PM, it seomeone is going to send me a blank key.

Did you guys read the tip from the guy in the Owners News who hides a spare key behind his license plate? I thought, "gee motorcycle thieves would love it if all BMW owners kept a spare key behind their plates, how convenient!"

I don't have a spare and once lost my key for about an hour. Having another one around would be nice.

One of the better reasons to own (what jo calls) a motoheap- a 16 y.o. motoheap at that. I think that K1100 bikes are pretty close to the bottom of any thief's list. Other than some rogue Mini racer............

Good luck with the key.

When I ride I always carry a spare key somewhere on me or on the bike.

I obtained 2 key blanks through a BMW dealer ... I think they were $15 each. Took them to my local locksmith ...Advanced Lock an Key in Marina Del Rey. He was happy to cut them, for $5 but offered no guarantee

.... but ... he did have non OEM brass key blanks for BMW motos ... $7 cut with a guarantee.

They brass keys have been working perfectly for awhile now ... oh ... yes I returned the OEM blanks to BMW and got my $30 + tax back.

The brass keys will work fine IF the key shop has (or can get) the correct blank. I had one on an earlier bike which worked well for years. The locksmith I frequented (the one who refused to cut the OEM key blanks) had blanks which supposedly would work. His price for the key (his blank) was $13.50. Thank you very much, I found a locksmith in Dallas who cut my OEM blank for $1. It works fine!

since most of the high points have been talked about.. i will let this out.
Most Keybrokers ( not locksmith) will only cut a brass blank because the cutting wheel is made of cheap steel. the wheels that cut steel are 2 to 3 time more expensive but last just as long as the cheap ones. this just allows running only one cutter. of both key blanks.
if you are using a brass blank be careful when using it on the ingition a lot of torque is required. henseforth the need a steel key.. also the internals of the lock is mad of brass.. so anyway you cut it something will were out soon

There's an Ilco Y61 or something like that that works fine on Ks. Get thee to a reputable locksmith.
