We head out WA2, boring, straight, no trees.

Father along.

Up over Stevens Pass down the other side to my sisters cabin.

Thoughtful sister left me a libation so I enjoyed the view.

We woke up the next day and everyone but me wanted to run back over the pass to a Bavarian themed tourist trap called Leavenworth. I said O.K. if we could detour to Plain, WA.

Hardware store is also in a official "Life Is Good" retailer.

Now you've seen downtown Plain.
No pics of tourist trap.
Back over the pass and we stop at Deception Falls.

Sis shows up with her hubby and dog, Willie. We hike to Trout lake, a hour in and a hour out. Here is mrs. red negotiating a washed out bridge.

And Sis, mrs. red and Willie in front of a tree on the way to Trout Lake.

Trout Lake

Cool old railroad tunnel. The first railroad over Stevens Pass.

After several days kickin' on the Skykomish we load up and head back over the North Cascade Highway.

Diablo Lake

Stayed in Omak at a Best Western for the night. 104 degrees when we rolled in. No pics of this broiler by the river.

Modern car wash though...

Then it's up over Sherman to Kettle Falls, ID.

Went from 104 to 53 degrees on top of Sherman.
Hit Kettle Falls, then Colville and up over Tiger pass to, where else, Tiger,

Then it was down the Pend Oreille River to home. The North Cascades were stunning. mrs. red ran out of batteries taking pictures of important stuff like the reflection of trees on the back of my helmet so we got no pictures of the Alp like peaks. Maybe I'll come home that way from Dungee.

This was a grueling post for me, hope it was worth it. now hit submit button........

See any Yeti?

It's cool that the plural of Yeti is......Yeti.

Like, "There goes a group of Yeti", or "Look at that Yeti throw that motobrick in the lake".

Fixed. No Yeti, course we probably wouldn't have any life in the camera batteries to document anyway. But you guys would believe me anyway, right?

Red:

If you're into day hikes in that region I can suggest a few next time you're over there. Wallace Falls is pretty easy but a nice big set of falls. Bridal Veil Falls is less frequented and there's a lake above the falls you can hike to.

Leavenworth - ugh!

Thanks! We usually do a couple when over there on the river. Bridal Veil is on the Sky, isn't it? Haven't done that one yet. How bout around your cabin?

Affirmative! But the lifestyle riders that were with us hadn't seen it before....Plain was cool though and actually a nice m/c road...except you end up in Leavenworth.

Yes, there's a few within a reasonable distance. My favorite is probably Mt. Townsend. Pretty easy and there are two ways to hike to the summit. Has excellent panorama view of all of Puget Sound with Seattle a long ways away down to Mt. Rainier and then the San Juan Islands, Strait of Juan de Fuca and Canada to the north. You can see the island my cabin is on from there too. You can also see the Bangor sub base. If you took a telescope up there you could be busy for days.

Marmot Pass is a little longer - four miles or something.

Then there's Lake Angeles above Port Angeles which is pretty easy.

If you want to see the nastiest two miles of "trail" in The Olympics then Lake Constance is the trail for you. A bit of a challenge if you've got a full pack for backcountry camping but not that bad for a day hike.

Probably one of the easier hikes is to Lower Lake Lena - 2 miles of easy grade to the lake. Our Boy Scout troop used to do that one every year for the noob hike. That trail is so easy that if you left something in the car you could just run back and get it.

Deer Lake above Sol Duc would be an easy day hike too.

Since you've indicated to me that you don't want to go on a group ride, (splitter!) let me know if you want to head out on a day hike by your lonesome on Saturday and I can get you GPS coordinates for the trailheads. I have a TOPO CD with all of the Olympics too and I'm bringing my laptop so could bring that CD with me.

In the late 80's thru the 90's, I probably hiked that mountain about every other year. The view from the 6,200' peak is fabulous! One time, near the peak, I came across what looked like fresh cougar tracks in the mud...which put some fear into me.

I used to be afraid of those fresh cougars, but they aren't that hard to outrun. I did let one catch me once though and kinda' liked it.

Nowadays, however, they seem more interested in younger prey. Just as well - Mrs Klinker is enough to handle...

Only the Reasonists. They believe in an evidence-based world, something called Rationalism. But it's a tiny group, not so influential.

Klinker, I didn't mean to confuse you. I meant a Mercury Cougar, not a big cat! The trail up there is like an old forest service road and this merc would routinely race along the trail and scare hikers, sort of like in a scene from 'Death Race 2000'. To be more visible I had to hoist up my bright yellow "Don't Tread on ME!" flag and signal I was packing an assault rifle as a deterrent...and it saved me life. Wink

I don't think he was confused or talking about the big cat either. Laughing Laughing
if you get my drift..........

thanks for sharing Red.
Either that tree is monumental or your relatives are miniscule.. I suspect the former.
Your roads may be straight but the scenery at the end of them is fabulous.
