Hi everyone,
As mentioned in my introduction, the 1993 BMW K1100RS I bought recently was lying idle for the better part of 8 years, and during that time, the fuel tank accumulated a bunch of sediment and muck.
Despite being cleaned thoroughly and fuel filter changed, there's still a stalling problem. However, I only occurs when the fuel level is at 1/4 tank. I reckon if it were still sediment clogging up the intake or injectors, it would happen all the time and not just at 1/4 tank right? The bike will be able to restart after a few minutes after stalling.
Also, the fuel gauge needle becomes very erratic at around the same time (1/4 tank), flicking itself between 1/2 and empty.
Any idea what could be causing the stalling problem? I'm thinking it could possibly be the fuel outlet from the tank itself, positioned wrongly perhaps; too high and not getting any feed when the fuel is low?
Please advise. Thanks in advance all

I'm thinking that you are on the right track. If the P.O. had the fuel filter replaced it's possible that the fuel pump assy could be out of alignment and not picking up fuel like it should.
You say the bike sat for 8 years. The fuel pump is mounted in a rubber holder, it's possible that after that much time that the rubber could be gum and not holding the pump assy in proper position.
As far as the fuel guage, that float assy is on the other side of the tank, we had a previous poster was having problems with his guage/low fuel light not reading right when low and found that when the fuel filter was replaced, the fuel hose for the filter was laying on the right side of the tank and blocking the float from going low with the fuel level. _________________ Ride safe.

Thanks for the info and advice Scott! Someone was suggesting I get the tank cut open and scrubbed out, then welded back together.
I did catch a glimpse of the 'floater' for the fuel gauge when the bike was in the shop and it looked in bad shape; encrusted with muck.
I'll get the shop to check out the rubber mount for the fuel pump right away, as well as its positioning.
Cheers!

Oh my God who told you to do so barbarity thing?! You can access a tank interior by removing the fuel level sender assembly (remember to put new rubber o-ring).

Also when you remove the fuel filler cap by taking out the 4 allen bolts the hole is big enough to get a hand in.
DONT forget the tank is Aluminium and not steel (try and get a magnetic tank bag to stick, I did and they wont... Doh)
I would remove the pump assembly and check the rubber mounts, on mine there is also a filter on the end of the pump (bottom) that might be causing trouble.
If you send me you Email I have a workshop manual in PDF I can send you, its for an LT/RS 93 on.

Something you might consider Chris, when you get all of the insides, pump assy w/ lines, float assy, etc.. out of the tank and also remove the seal plate with the wiring assy, you could have the inside of the tank STEAM cleaned to try and remove the gunk from the tank.
NOT SAND OR GLASS BEADS BUT STEAM
Not to mention the obvious that after a good steam bath, requires very, very thurough dry out.
We used to have a repair shop here in town that would steam clean fuel tanks for restorers etc... _________________ Ride safe.
