Hi
MY cheap K11LT has a AWOL ABS1 and I cannot be bothered to chase my tail in getting it sorted (been here before). I am going to de-ABS it so has anyone done it and is there anything to watch for electrically?
I am going to order a new longer front brake pipe and the rear one on the ABS1 will fit anyhow at the right angle. The hard brake pipes will have to stay as they seem to be one of the 1st bits on the frame as i have taken an LT apart before. The brakes are good anyhow and the ABS switch seems semi seized so resetting hasn't been sucessful.
Cheers

Not much to it.
I just ran new hoses from the master cylinders direct to the calipers, removed the pumps and elctronic brain.
I think I pulled the ABS relay also, its been a while so I don't remember

Thanks Mike,
I thought it would be pretty easy. I can use the Hydro pumps for gym weights or boat anchors; the postage cost me most of what I got for them last time I sold some!

Hello !
When you take out the abs system, please be so kind and put all components on scale and notify us how heavy it is. Just to calm my curiosity.

I did mine a while ago ,fairly straight forward mod, all you need is a short piece of pipe made up with the two male ends to join the existing hoses . Most brake service workshops should be able to do this just take in one of the hoses for them to match up the thread.Brakes work better and you drop a fair amount of weight. _________________ 92k1100 lt with sidecar. 93K1100 CAFE..86K75C.95 k1100lt |

I have finished the de-ABS. A HEL brake pipe for the top hose to union and the rest removed. In answer to one question it all weighs about 10kg!
Cheers

| Why don't you get BMW to de-code your ABS? Then go from there. Maybe you can fix it. To pull the relays go under the fuel tank. They are blue and right there under the lid. Your light will not flash. |

I think that some day I may want to get my ABSI working again or I will come across a deal on the "brain" so I just inplugged and removed the brain. It made a nice spot to put my StarCom unit and I also nestled the can for the cruise control in there and used some of the existing holes for mounting. _________________ 1993 K1100LT

| If your brain box is OK, I'll buy it. I'll send you $10 for shipping and I'll send you $20 more if it works. |

Just to put a dampner on this, I hope you realise that in the UK the ABS in now part of the MOT test and has been for two years. If you bike is factory fitted then it will be on the DVLA system and comes up on the computer when the tester logs on, they need to see the lights flashing correctly when ignition is switched on. You may need to inform DVLA of the change under the construction and use regs. If I'm wrong please let me know as this is the information i've been given. _________________ Fat Ba***d with a K1100LTse

The MOT is not part of the test in itself. It states "check ABS lights where fitted" and now its not! The relay has been pulled and the brake bulb test light in the centre which flashes hyper annoyingly when ABS is malf'ed is now working correctly!!
I know that MOT tests have become unbelievably anal over the past few years but I have yet to find a non BMW or similar MOT tech who would know whether bike had ABS or not. They seem more worried about the lamination of my GS numberplate than anything.
Brakes work as normal... bite better... and I now own one of the non ABS version K11LT's that are offered to the select few!
I have nothing against ABS and in fact am all for it as long as it works. In my experience it is one of the best reasons for the sharp intake of breath and mega £££££'s look for a parts guy. targets, targets!

I only brought this up as i'm in the trade and had a problem with my ABS two years ago at test time and when myself and the tester checked the log on for my bike it was listed as abs. The abs system is part of the test but only to check if the system fail warnings work and not actually test the modulators working.
The testers manual states: the vehicle has to pass one of three manadatory brake tests
1) Brake Rollers
2) Spring balance
3) Gradient test.
If it fails the test but in the opinion of the tester should have passed then a road test maybe undertaken.
There are test stations out there that are not as clued up on some of the modern systems my friend takes his GSadv for test and the guy hasn't got a clue about abs or linked brake systems so as long as it stops ok he'll pass it. If you don't get any problems testing your bike then good luck to you, i'm not a great fan of abs i'd rather make sure i've got enough room to stop normally.
Ride safe. _________________ Fat Ba***d with a K1100LTse

Hi Tech
Thought you were a tech so may be in the know a little more. I think and hope the MOT's stay this side of common sense! At the moment they are still about general safety.
At least the ABS I and II still brakes OK when not working. I marvelled at the Integral ABS set up when i sold BM's and used to pull big stops in the wet for fun and wonderment, K12LT's being the favourite.
Not so good for the home mechanic though when 1/2 brakes appear and the little warning light flashes. I once sold an Integral GS and the chap must have tried the grips or left the ignition on or something 'cos as he braked at the end of the road at night on his first ride the bike died due to the servo killing the battery!
I had a grey import for a short while and that was failed for the park light not working, and guess what...... it didn't have one.
