I have had this bike 7 yrs., putting on over 60k, and now has 86k. About a year ago, I was in the N. Ga. mtns and missed 4-5 shift after passing a car??? It grinds alittle and goes into neutral?? It has happened about 4-5 times and just happend again the other day. It has synthetic Mobile One and at the last fluid change, no particles.
I also have had a 85 K100RT since the early 90's, which never did that, but I had to replace the transmission when a part broke and locked up the trans at 40 mph!!
Maybe I just don't know how to shift the LT anymore? I also have an 07 Yamaha FJR, which I have put 37k on the last 2 1/2 years, and is an easy, quick shift. Everytime I get back from a long trip on the FJR(Alaska this summer), I miss 1-2 shifts several times on the LT till I get use to it again.
Heading for problems or re-train on LT shifting?

If I had a buck for every shift I missed before you know it we'd be talking about real money. I still get mad every time I do it because I think it shows I'm not paying enough attention. The grinding however would give me cause for concern.
Does it make sense that switching from one bike to another might take a little adjustment? _________________ Jim

I have felt that the shift lever needs a way to slightly adjust it downward.
Just went down to MY SPACE (the heated double garage) and rotated the shift lever down by one "tooth" on the trans spline.
Want to see how it feels but the upcoming week says RAIN.
Expect to see Phil Marvin here Thurs p.m. Maybe ride to meet him on Thursday -or- ride with Phil down to Saltcreek's farm on Friday.

I think its just re-training JR. My LT has done the same thing occasionally for over 40K miles.
I recently re-read Pridmore's book & started working on "smoother shifting". Guess what? I get more "false neutrals" between 4 & 5 as I try to learn faster shifting. My guess is your bike is just fine. Quit worrying and just enjoy the German definition of "flickable" gear shifts

Pull the clutch in and commit to the shift with your foot. Lazy feet cause false neutrals - at least in my case.

I miss that 4-5 shift a lot if I use the clutch. When I preload the lever and reduce rpm's slightly it moves right into 5, never a miss, never a grind. Now I'm not talking about slamming it. _________________ '93 K1100LT

Same here. Since I broke my left foot 2 yrs ago I seem to mis shifts easier if I'm not paying attention and get lazy. _________________ Ride safe.

Have to agree here, I very rarely miss any gear, only when trying too hard, over all i think the BMW box is good but can be a bit tractor like.

Just getting back my GS box which has the mis between 3 and 4th I think (while since i rode it, ahem). They have a double ramp engaging dog on the side fo the gear wheel and usually miss if you haven't got it up the 2nd step so to speak.
My K11 has the 4th to 5th, My CBR6 had 3 to 4 which at 10k revs+ was a little bit of a shock to jump out of! VFR same,...,...., etc... etc. Funnily enough i recently had a PC800 for a short time and 5k miles and the 1st miss on 3 to 4 made me go "ah, Honda"!!
The best BMW box was the K100 I had and to be honest, even when i sold BMW's and they kept harping on about improved changing, but i didn't really notice.
Pair of Savanna boots or now Santiago's. Bit heavier for the BM gearbox experience.

PS silvery bits in oil are usually the selector forks wearing away as they are titanium coated alloy. Silver = alloy=non magnetic=GS gearbox! |

PS I also throttle blip on upshifts as well as down shifts. It seems to make a difference especially on the "2 snick" shifts like 4th to 5th. Realised that today while riding!

My up changes are usually clutchless, except for heavy traffic. The only time I get a problem is using the clutch. You have to be *very* positive about the shift.
Sometimes, I'll change down without the clutch... but I wouldn't recommend it, until (and unless) you have a "feel" for it.
As you say, we're not booting it into gear, just a firm, positive and *smooth* action. _________________ Fr Jack

I'd been doing so well. Hadn't missed a shift since reading this thread. Yesterday I missed 1-2 at about 6000 rpm trying to merge from a stop into 55 mph traffic.  _________________ Jim

I learned to drive a "many-speed-transmission" semi-truck one time thinking I might help out a friend.
You figure out how to shift without a clutch real quick. Otherwise you go nowhere.
The skills learned have been very useful in dealing with BMW transmissions. _________________ '93 K1100LT

I have tried all of the tricks and techniques and everytime I think it is working great, another missed shift. The 3-4 is fairly rare but the 4-5 shift happens once or twice a week. The shifter literally stops moving after coming out of 4th and I have to release the shifter and raise it again to get it to click into 5th. It's has gotten to the point that I know the feel and just naturally double shift. _________________ Doug

Hi,
I got K1100lt this past July. I was missing shifts various places. I came from a Honda V65 Magna.
I've learned to shift above 3.5 to 4K rpms. I don't get missed shifts anymore.
Incidentally, mine had 130k + on the clock and still climbing.  _________________ 1993 K1100LT
