Was looking at the BMW service manual today. Found a spec for "Permissible Oil Conssumption"
Metric is 1.5 liters/1,000km
US Quarts per 1,000 miles is 2.55
I don't know about you guys but that spec seems a bit excessive to me. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

If you are using over 2 quarts in 1000 miles it would look like a smog machine. I dont think I use a quart in 3000 miles. _________________ Ron

I use 1 quart every 600 miles in very hot weather-800+ miles on cooler days. This can vary with what oil viscosity I use.
But the manual allowing a bike to BURN a quart every 400 miles sounds like a two stroke _________________ John & Cathy

1/3 quart every 1,000 miles. My k75 uses less than 1/6 quart per thousand. Why the difference? _________________ 93 K1100LT

I think that would be excessive for a two stroke. _________________ Jim

Just finished a 3100 mile trip and only used 1 qt total. I didn't think that was too bad.
And yes, still running dino oil at 64000+ miles. _________________ Ride safe.

Not a great sales pitch even though you would be pushed to get a clear pic on a speed camera!
This is usually to cover oil consumption when new as they can burn baby burn. Some do, some don't. My old K11 used 1/2 litre per 1000m and my new one doesn't use anything much. My old K100 used zero, my R11's have used a bit.
Some new flat 4 K12's couldn't be started in the showroom, ahem!
