Finally managed to get a ride today on the K1100, first time after buying and riding it home due to work and constant wet weather.
I've already mentioned the drip and have bought a seal rebuild kit for the water / oil pump.
Readers of previous posts might recall the temp guage is reading incorrectly also and whilst having a ride today, (noticeably fewer pops and spits BTW, might be related to cleaning the pins on the Motronic unit, some were a bit green), couple of backfires rolling off low throttle in 4th but otherwise pulling well.
Re the temp, while the pump is off I'll check the thermostat and think i'll replace the temp sensor in the pump body as it was green and nasty where the spade connector fits, cleaned it but no difference, the overheat light seems to function but the guage doesn't, now looking at diagrams it seems there are two temp sensors? one in the pump body and one near the filler tube? can someone confirm this, (haven't yet stripped the fairings), now I was curious, if the sensor that's feeding the fuel guage is also feeding the motronic system the motronic unit will think it's colder than it really is and i assume would increase the fuel ratio to richen the mixture, (the plugs when removed were sooty but do look like they haven't been swapped in a while)
I'd be interested to get further info on how the temp sensor system works and if this could be the case, also if it is i'll need to arrange replacement of both sensors to be on the safe side.
Thanks |

Water pump sensor only goes to the gauge.
The temp sensor on the coolant outlet on the top front of the cylinder head is where the Motronic gets it's reading. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

That's handy to know, thanks, is there a means of testing the sensor once have it stripped to see if it's functioning within parameters?
The pump one has seen better days and for the cost i'll replace anyway, possibly the wiring and spade connector too as that isn't looking it's healthiest, unless the upper one looks rough i'd like to test before replacing.
Do you know where the temp warning light gets it's feed from BTW? this did light when riding it home and stuck in heavy traffic and sunshine, (not much of that at the moment here) (sunshine, not traffic), but the guage was just outside the blue (cool) area.

Is your fan coming on? That should happen before the temp light comes on. I'd start by troubleshooting the fan.
The fan should come on when you ground the blue/yellow wire on the fan relay.
Temperatures:
Thermostat: 185
Fan comes on: 221
Warning light: 239
Radiator cap blows: 248
If you do some searching I think there's a thread on how to troubleshoot the head coolant sensor with various Ohm readings at various temperatures. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks again, diagram handy.
As per previous threads though the fan is hardwired to a manual switch, clearly had failed at some point and rather than having the sensor thing sorted properly a previous owner had the new fan fitted and hardwired to a toggle switch, if I can sort the temp sensor I'd like to re-wire to the loom plug but retain the manual switch as an override, but that's something to look at later, so the fan won't cut in due to being disconnected, (found this out whilst sitting in the aforementioned heavy traffic in hot weather, nice eh, knew about the manual switch but seller neglected to mention the auto cut in wasn't wired)
Will have a look for the previous threads on checking the sensor.
Cheers,
Mike |

Take a look at this thread which will tell you how to check the Motronic for fault codes:

I recently had an issue where my temperature gauge did not move beyond the blue section of the dial. I suspected rich running due to low temperature. I used the following info: http://www.geocities.com/fwarner_au/mc_things/K_fuel_injection.html to test the temperature gauge that feeds to the Motronic. It was fine. The gauge also tested fine as per instructions found on this site.
I removed my thermostat, tested in hot water, it seemed to work. However I decided to replace it based on the experience relayed in the following post: http://www.k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6876&highlight=thermostat .
After replacing the thermostat, my temperature gauge now reads as it should, sits just below 1/2 way at normal temperature.
I would be interested to see what readings anybody gets for the TPS values following Frank Warner's guide. _________________ Ken Keane
