|
|
Come on you guys, a hockey puck for a side stand? Next thing you know you'll be defeating the sidestand switch. Oh yeah, after I put on the hockey puck I defeated the sidestand switch. How cool is that for the bike to be able to keep running and not appear to be falling over after I back it out of the garage. How come you don't see very many of the K11s out there? Not hardly on ebay or Craigs list either. It's a great bike and I'm having fun riding and working on it. This forum is what I needed to get up to speed. With this forum, the repair manuals and a heated garage will make my winter here in Michigan. _________________ k1100lt 94 46000 miles

Welcome!
Lots of knowledgeable people here. I've found the site to be very resourceful. I haven't done the hockey puck mod, however.

Amazing, was messing around today and decided the Honda's old HP could be modified for K use.
Great minds and all that.
May not be elegant but works, and beats the gizmos I always carry in case of gravel.
Good ridin'

A few years ago I sacrificed my old (ancient?) Phil Esposito hockey puck for the K. I screwed it to the stand and trimmed to fit. It worked great but the side load eventually made it crack and that was that. A puck less than 40 years old might have lasted a bit longer. _________________ Paul - '93 K11/12RS (sold), 2002 R1100S BCP and '03 RC51 KOG 29 |

I actually did this last week. Used two hockey pucks that I screwed into each other (2 screws), then screwed and bolted the pucks to the bottom of stand. Take a look:
Doesnt look all that bad and makes it so that I can pick her up on quite an angle when parked. _________________ 1992 K75S

How's it work with the center stand? Every thing fold up O.K.? Tried all the scenarios such as, ride into the garage, put the bike on the side stand, get off and throw it on the center stand. Now the side stand is out and it's on the center stand. Try to fold everything back up. Just curious. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

I also fixed my heated grips today with a razor blade, a soldering iron, stereo wires and a plate of french fries. Pretty good?
Yes, the only draw back of the side stand creation is that you need to have the sidestand out when you put down the center stand. And vice versa. Not really a problem at all. _________________ 1992 K75S

Just curious, what did you use the stereo wires for? _________________ Jim

Used the stereowires to extend the broken wire from my heated grip out to where it should have connected to the bike. Soldered them all together to give myself more play so that I could work with the wires better. The past owner had been in a bit of a tumble, and the wires had been sheared from the left side.
The french fries were for the bike. _________________ 1992 K75S

Hello!
After some research I can say that all problems with too low side stand is in worn brushing in the stand axle. There is a port to put grease and lubricate the axle. But usually no one do that (the same story about centre stand). When it get worn additional free play appears and bike leans too much.
garydi - I have a serious doubts about your K75. IMHO it is not a S model (I used to own one form 19986). The fairing is not a S type or was changed in the past. Look at VIN - model type is indicated in the end of number. _________________ Rafal

The zerk fitting for lubing the sidestand didn't come on the early K75s. And K 75s REALLY lean when on the side stand.
Since it's got a belly pan there's a fair chance that it started life with an S fairing. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I had the same problem. I stuck on an extension to the sidestand of my K1100RS, and that solved the acute 'lean' angle, but the extension didn't allow the side stand to come back down, it got hung up under the centre stand.

my k1100RS side stand, it doesn't lean much and hasn't fallen over yet.
Plus you can roll it around the barn while on the side stand, helpful for rearranging to get to the other projects.

Well, of course. Everyone knows that the "right hand side stand" option has it's advantages, including negating the need for a center stand. It essentially involves putting a large "hockey puck" on an axle and mounting it vertically.
Unforturnately, this set-up does compromise maneuverability in tight spaces and requires the "stand" to pretty much always be in the "down" position. (Although I hear it is possible to lift the "stand" while riding...an exercise which I understand to be especially thrilling - particularly for the passenger when not planned.)
