My 1997 K 1100 LT came with a service and repair manual for 1985 to 1995 K75 and K100 bikes.

To change a clutch should mine be the same?

a special tool is called for in the K75 model, but not the K100. The K1100?

This doesn't appear to be a pressure plate, flywheel and throwout bearing setup.

I prefer to ride, and not work on the motorcycle. Nearly 117,000 miles.
Recommendations of what to replace? Is there a kit?

Anyone other than BMW make these parts?

Thanks

Ken

the cltuches on the K75, K100 and K1100 are basically the same design with different parts. The procedure and values for torquing the main clutch nut are different though.

No special tookls are REQUIRED. There's easy ways to get around that.

Here's how the clutch works on a K:

Opinions vary on what to replace. There is not a kit.

I think BMW recommends replacing:

Clutch plate
Pressure plates
Clutch bolts and washers
Maybe the diaphram spring too

I'd only bother replacing the clutch plate though.

Parts are only available from BMW.

I HAVE a snowboarder in the house, but I prefer two sticks under my legs thanks.

There is a picture that LOOKS like he has ski's strapped to that motorcycle. I wondered about where he parked.

I am going to HAVE to try this next spring.

Skiing from the bike. Super savings on gas.

Thanks for the idea

Oh.....and 10 days for it to come in, so if I don't order all of the parts, then need something I didn't order......10 more days.

Tricky tricky tricky.

Maybe I need to look online and see if I can get it cheaper, or at least if someone has it in stock.

Many folk replace the whole lot including the stretch bolts. At least the friction plate and the stretch bolts at a minimum but there can be early failures if you don't replace the whole lot. Strip the bike and then think "do i want to do this again in the near future!"

I did the friction plate and the 6 bolts/washers (plus the rear engine seal and that #@$!@#@ "O"ring) this past summer. Works 100% now.

Hmmmmm I didn't see an O ring in what the parts guy told me.

Is it too painful to remember back and let me know what it sealed off? Wouldn't want to miss THAT kind of fun while I was in there?

OR...... It is OK Ken don't worry about that #@*%@#&$ "O" ring?

After you pull off our bike's equivalent of a "flywheel" (what the pressure plate and the friction plate are bolted to) there is an O ring that keeps the engine oil inside the engine and off of the clutch.

#11 in the picture below

The one on my '93 RS was as hard as a rock and not doing its job at all.

IMHO, as long as you have the transmission pulled back you should replace it. Or you might be doing it all over again very soon.....

One CANNOT remove #1 from the crank unless you have piggled out #11. DAMHIK. You need to do this to check / change the crank oil seal, a common failure on K's that have stood a while. It is there to stop engine oil running along the splines & out from under the nut.

I guess we will figure out #11 when we get there. On the bright side, my bike doesn't sit long without being ridden. On the "what a drag" side, I don't believe BMW priced that part.

Thanks everyone for your information, pictures, and comments. Greatly appreciated.

Easier having an idea what your in for before you get there.

If you have the bike apart to that stage replace the #11 O ring anyway, if it leaks after you have installed a new clutch the plate will end up an oily paper weight.
My RS one leaked and took the clutch with it and on stripping the LT it was hard as iron.
I had to use a three leg puller to get the drive plate off as the O ring wouldn't come out any other way.

the "O" ring picture changed? what is up with that?

I will look into that when ordering parts and buy that. As I have said.....I WAY prefer riding to working on it.
