Since I'll be down here in CA a lot this winter I'm leaving my K1100RS here. Fortunately there's ample garage space for it here. I already have a dash switch wired for my garage door opener at home. Figured that it would be handy to have that down here as well.
My opener at home has a 12V battery so the opener is powered by the bike. This opener has a 3V litium coin battery so I'll just let that work as the power source for the opener.
Step 1: Solder two wires to both sides off the button on the opener:
Step 2: Add a 12V relay to connect those wires when the relay is triggered. I like to use use 12V DPDT PCB (printed circuit board) relays like the one below. They're cheaper and smaller than automotive relays and work great for small current applications like this or LED stuff.
I drilled some small holes in the garage door opener housing, ran the two wires through the holes, put the garage dor operner back together and then soldered them to the normally open pins on the relay. I also soldered on positive and negative wires to trigger the relay.
In order to keep the pins from bending/breaking off from the relay and waterproof it, I wrap the relay in electrical tape and then fill that with JB Weld or in this case 5 minute epoxy. Like so:
When the epoxy has cured and the tape is removed it looks like this:
The positive lead is wired to a 12V switched source, the negative lead is grounded by the momentary switch in the dash pad and the thing is hidden inside the fairing.
I'll only be riding in dry weather but if this were more permanent I'd probably mummify the opener in elctrical or duct tape to keep it dry. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
