God morning all...

OK... I'm new to this bike ( '95 K1100LT ) and am just starting to get into the details, BUT one thing is really bothering me is the Side-Stand ! Given the mechanics of its mount,,etc... it is just too short to nest into the pocket of the muffler. Could it be that a K75 stand, or some other model, has been substituted for the original by the PO ?? Or is it even possible to fit the stand from another "K" series bike onto the LT ??? The side stand and the center stand appear to interfere with one another when both are retracted, and the 'pavement pad' of the sidestand rattles against the muffler since it is too short and out of position to seat in the rubber nest... What do any of you think might be the problem here ??

Thanks in advance for any opinions and or advice !!

Best regards all..............// Ernie-NH

There should be a rubber bumper on a bracket on the underside of the exhaust. IF that's missing it might be contributing to your problem.

Get the pics up and I can compare to mine, I do know that they fit very close together when both retracted.
As FD says, things like missing / loose baffle plates and rubber bump stops can cause the probs

Hi Mr. Duck...

You're right, however the bumper is there hanging where its supposed to be, and gets engaged by the center stand ok, but the side stand is simply too short to even reach the bumper nest. I'm taking pictures ( those will be a laugh ) to explain this a bit better, but even when I remove the pivot bolt and bushing and hand hold the stand in its "supposed to be" position ( ie: nested in the bumper ), the center hole of the stand itself is a good 1.5 inches away from the pivot clevis. Thats what led me to believe that it is simply too short and may not be the OEM stand. Will post the pics when I figure out just how to do it on this MAC !!

Thanks again all.............// Ernie-NH

Hi John....

Weather looks like it might be OK for Friday.... I'm retired and have a LOT of time on my hands so its never a problem for me. However, I dont know where Jim lives or even if he's available... I would suggest meeting at say exit 20 at the diner. Its well known and easy to get to... Or if Jim cant make it, I would suggest meeting in Woodstock perhaps at the brewery and maybe a lunch or someplace in Lincoln ??

Let me know..... Thanks !!

Regards..........// Ernie-NH

Hello everyone....

Just want to 'update' you on the probable outcome of the original question regarding the K1100LT sidestand issue. I couldn't figure out why the sidestand would not nest into the rubber bumper and why it interferes with the indentation provided on the muffler. So I met up yesterday ( 23 Oct ) with "SugarHill" ( aka John ) to compare his sidestand and mine, and to see if his opinion was/is the same as mine. We measured and compared the stand on his bike with mine and they are identical in all respects with the exception of the angle that the pivot plane makes with respect to the ground. It appears that the pivot on John's bike has a slightly steeper angle than the LT so that it 'sweeps' up and into the bumper nest, whereas the LT is flatter causing the contact pad of the stand to sweep back and interfere with the top edge of the muffler indentation. Because of that it simply cannot reach the bumper nest. The distance of the muffler indentation from the pivot is the same on both the LT and John's bike. Together we speculated that some PO had replaced the OEM sidestand with a stand from an RS model,,,but since neither of us has any background in "sidestand" specifics that is/was only a guess.

Since a new stand from Max lists at $146... I am going to wait until my new bushing and bolt arrive, and then simply cut, extend and reweld the stand arm to fit as it should. ( any objections ? )__

I know this is more than any of you would want to know about this, but I do owe you all an explanation as well as thanks for your responses to my seemingly "dumb" question...

Bet regards all, ride safe and enjoy !!............// Ernie-NH __

That's not it. Same parts usedon both bikes. It might be from a 2 vavle K75 or K100 though.

But Ernie and I measured his vs. mine and the sidestands are identical. Distances from the pivot to the indent on the exhaust system are identical.

If we had more time we could swap sidestands. That might have to happen to solve this problem.

One thing that is strange is that Ernie says he has to deploy his sidestand first then the centerstand. Otherwise he cannot retract the centerstand.
I very rarely EVER use the sidestand, so I never have a second thought as to which one I put down first, second or not at all.

So Question

I've not had any issues with interference between my side stand and/or the center stand. I can use either one independantly with out bothering the other.

I'm thinking like Duck in that it sounds like it's not the original issue for the '95 1100.

Someone didn't put a "puck" on the bottom of the side stand did they? That can interfere with the center stand if it's not done properly.

Ernie, I personally wouldn't cut/weld on the side stand. Check with some of the bike breakers, you may be able to find the whole stand assy for a reasonable price.

Ernie - see how it looks after you change the bushing and the bolt. I'm with Scott - it should be easy and not too expensive to get a used set up from IBMWR.org, one of the parts yards, or ebay.

Good advice all....

You've convinced me to search the 'graveyards' first and see if I can come up with an entire assy... Will keep you posted !!

Thanks again...................// Ernie-NH

I had that issue on my K75. I attributed it to the bike being lowered changing the geometry. The centerstand would only come down after the sidestand was down. Very weird but left it that way.

Good morning "Slash"...

My "K" has not been lowered, but others have commented here that they experience the "interference" problem also from time to time. With my "K" its a full time interference. So until I can find a certified genuine "K1100LT" sidestand in a boneyard that I am willing to pay for, I have modified the 'foot tab' so that it will not interfere and I can thus use either. Sidestand isues on BMW bikes go back to the '50s and before. I think that perhaps the rare
"sidestand design" gene may be missing from the Aryan race... I know the Japanese seem to have no problem with sidestands !!

At any rate Slash, thanks for the input and the observation !!

Very best regards and ride safe !........// Ernie-NH

Ernie, looking at you last pics over in the pic thread I can see your side stand problem.

Someone modified the foot and added about an inch to the bottom, or what ever size that square tube is.

That's where your problem is.

Here's a couple of pics of mine on my '97.

p.s. I do currently have the exhaust off of the bike so that's why it's not in the picture.

Hi Scott...

Yes.... I took that dumb square piece off since it came up and clanged against the center stand. BUT even with it off, the tube of the sidestand does not swing in enough, and it is too short to reach the rubber bumper nest. New stands from BMW or Max are just too expensive ( $146 list ) so I decided to peen one tab of the foot over (rearmost ) and add my own rubber bumper in order to keep the sidestand arm from rattling against the muffler. Since it now seems to work OK (even though not proper ) and does not interfere with the centerstand, I'm going to stick with it until I can find a boneyard with a sidestand to sell...

Thanks for the pics... they give me a much better nderstanding of how it should be !!

Very best regards and ride safe please.......// Ernie-NH
