Now to you chaps who strip a bike before breakfast, this won't seem particularly interesting, but to me it's a series of minor triumphs..
I bought a set of these: http://www.bikevis.com/motorcycle-led-running-lights.html
great little LEDs but I've been pondering where to situate them. I decided I'd try to put them under each mirror so this morning I took off the screen assembly (can do that in my sleep by now!) removed the mirrors (triumph 1) separated the fronts from the backs without breaking them (triumph 2) drilled appropriate holes (triumph 3) fed the cables through and linked them up with the side-light feed (triumph 4), reassembled all (triumphs 5, 6, 7) to find all working as required.
As a bonus the cables will also hold the mirrors on if they get hit filtering (lane splitting).
So all in all, I deserve the large glass of Big Jack's I'm about to pour myself. Don't you just love it when things go right? _________________ Cheers, Steve H _______________________________________

Sounds great!
Waiting for:
Triumph #8: Pictures
Triumph #9: A review of them. Those look pretty cool. How bright are they in daylight? Would you recommend them? _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Hi Duck, they are brilliant - in both senses of the word!
I'll take some pics in daylight as soon as I get a chance. I put them on the wife's bike instead of spots as the latter ran down the battery, these of course take very little current. _________________ Cheers, Steve H _______________________________________

i would be interested in knowing how you got the mirror assembly apart. mine has got junk in the seam from previous owners doing a bad job at waxing the bike.
those are pretty sweet. a set of red (or green) would look b.a. buried in the fairing so they just illuminate the inside and make it look like it glows. and of course a set pointing forward to be more visible. _________________ (formerly) 1993 k1100rs |

I wonder why they make them in blue. I don't know about Europe but over here blue lights are reserved for police so I think you'd get a ticket pretty easily.
Anybody else here from the US interested in these? I am. If we did a US group buy then we might not get a quantity break but could save a fair amount on shipping. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Rubbing alcohol and a toothpick or paper towel should get the wax out. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I'm in touch with the company (in the personable form of Dan) and would be happy to try to negotiate a discount if there's enough interest.
Is it worth starting an 'interested thread'?
As to the blue - to be honest I'm not sure how the law stands here but there are certainly plenty of 'boy racer' types in hot hatches who have blue side lights.
Supercat, getting the mirror ass apart was just a matter of patience, a flat bladed screwdriver and brute force and ignorance! Twisting the blade gently until something gives and then pushing in until you can get a purchase on the inner metal frame. well, that does make me feel a little better. but then did you just super glue it back together?
duck -- i believe you are correct. i do know that the leds that street racers put on their car window washers are illegal if blue or red (and potentially entirely). also, any extra lighting on the car must not have the bulb visible. so the ground lights have to be recessed under the car. and yes, the same color rules apply.
BUT, i have been to multiple bike nights in downtown kc where numerous harleys and crotch rockets have had extra lighting that was blue and red. and there were most definitely cops all around these events (when you have nearly 1000 bikes parked in the street and parking lots you gotta have some police presence) and didn't see any issues. so maybe for bikes it doesn't apply as long as they aren't forward facing or directed lights?
personally i like white for my forward facing lights. i just replaced the headlamps in my 328i with some super whites and absolutely love how much better they are. i will put a super white in the brick once that light goes. _________________ (formerly) 1993 k1100rs |

Supercat, I definitely wouldn't use superglue to re assemble. If you do it'll probably prevent any future dis-assembly! I have used a rubber based glue while holding the mirrors together with tape. I just need to finish them off with black silicone to smooth of the little gap but I've got to take one off again so I'm happy I hadn't finished them off yet. If possible I'll take pics of the process this time. _________________ Cheers, Steve H _______________________________________

I use 5 minute epoxy. Holds but can be pulled apart in the future if necessary. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Maybe the cops just don't want to hassle guys at biking events. Who knows? I can't vouch for other states but I'm pretty sure I'd get a ticket in Washington. The only blue LEDs I've seen on bikes around here is that the Seattle PD has blue ones always on on the backs of their Harleys. (Makes 'em easy to spot in traffic at night. )

Yeah, I've got superwhite 90/100W bulbs in my bikes. (Don't do this unless you have headlight relays.) They made the Hella FF50s (also upgraded to superwhite) more or less obsolete so those are pointed off to the side for critter spotting.
Have you ever seen the CATZ orange lights in person? If you ever did you'd buy a pair. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

In New Hampshire....
Red for emergency services
Green for state troopers
Blue for local police
BUT all are FLASHING
Lots of newer, high end autos have HID lights that have that bluish tint. Don't think that these LEDs would be mistaken for EMS or LEO's _________________ John & Cathy

Both my headlamp and driving lights have a slight(very slight) bluish tint to them.
I have seen some Lexus suv headlights with more blue in them. _________________ Ride safe.

why would I like catz lights so much? Aren't those the extra lights that jo has on the front of his bike? If so ... Not much of a fan of how they look.
so I have that euro light switch installed on my bike, is it possible to do a relay with that? Also what about just doing hid conversion? _________________ (formerly) 1993 k1100rs |

Because of how their color and brightness (without being blinding) make a bike EXTREMELY conspicuous from even long distances. My first highway trip I also noticed that cars would pull to the right to free up the left lane long before I got there. So, aside from the safety aspect they actually help you get places a wee bit faster. They also seem to really help when lanesplitting in CA.
I honestly don't like having add-on lights on my bike at all but I'd much rather be seen. My philosophy on lighting is that when I hit a car I want it to be my fault.
| Quote: | | so I have that euro light switch installed on my bike, is it possible to do a relay with that? Also what about just doing hid conversion? |
The Euro switch isn't an issue. There's a post over in the Tech Stickies with more info on headlight relays.
To start with, HID conversions are illegal. Enforcement varies from what I've heard although I've heard the CHP will nick you for it.
Secondly, the headlight lens is not designed for HID lighting which can cause light scatter that blinds oncoming traffic. (Which is why they're illegal.)
A few people have reported doing it successfully with a K11 headlight. Others have reported trying it and swithcing back. If I thought it were doable with good results then I'd try it but decided it's not worth the effort.
I've heard that even going 90/100W is illegal but I have my headlight carefully aimed so the low beam doesn't blind the car in front of me or oncoming traffic. I've gotten a second look or two in CA (I think they're trying to discern if it's HID or not since it has a VERY slight blue tint) but have not been pulled over.
I really like the 100W high beam of the superwhite Xenon bulb. I've got more than enough headlight to do 80 and have no desire to go faster than that at night anyhow. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
