There is no way to register a bike with a salvage title here in Ontario (Canada). Good for parts only. Are there any major problems licensing a salvage title bike in any US states? My bike is a Franken-bike RS, but clean title. I'd like to get an inexpensive LT (a contradiction in terms?) and since I do my own wrenching, something properly repaired doesn't scare me - too much! Shocked

It varies by stare. From what I hear in Washington you have to get it almost back to brand new shape to get the title rebranded "REBUILT" and then it's road legal.

A buddy of mine in California says all you have to do is get the CHP to inspect it to make sure it's road legal. (lights, horn, brakes, etc...) It still has a salvage title but then can be licensed, registered and legally ridden.

For my K75 project I found a straight frame with a clean title for $150 shipped so the end product will have a clean, non-salvage title and I won't need to get it inspected or anything. In fact, I've already transferred title and have the license plate for it.

My bike came as a salvage out of Long Beach California and I put it back together in Colorado. All I had to do was get it inspected by the State Police and the only thing on the title that reflected that it was a salvage was an "S" on the title. When I got the title for Maryland they didn't see the S so now I have a title that isn't a salvage title.

a.k.a. "washing" a title

Is your bike insured? It might come back to bite you since in some insurance company computer somewhere that VIN is associated with a salvage title. If you have colliosn/comprehenisve or get smashed by someone else that might be an issue.

The only way vehicles get salvage titles is when insurance companies total them.

The way it was explained to me by the state police and my insurance company when I first put the bike together is once the bike was inspected by the state police and passed it would not be an issue with any insurance company as to its coverage or insurablility.

If it's roadworthy and inspected then it's certainly insurable. It's more an issue of how they decide to value a bike and compensate you in the event the bike gets totaled. (Which takes very little damage on a used BMW.)

In Texas you can get a Bonded title. Its transferable at that point. All that is needed is a bill of sale and a Vin #.

Thanks for all of the info. The no way to re-licence policy here makes no sense to me at all. I was going to call about that LT in Washington state, but the add was pulled before I could. Sold, I assume. Sad
