I did some experimenting with moutning my camera on the RS last week and took a ride up CA 74 - The Palms to Pines Highway. The camera is cantilevered and tends to shake around too much. I ran the clip through some video stabilization software which helps but the frames still jump around a bit now and then.
Here's the video. There's no audio because it's all wind noise. Next time I'll puy some tape over the microphone and see how that works.

A little jumpy but not too bad. Nice video. When you are following that car is the camera auto focusing on it? _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Seems as jumpy as mine when the camera was behind the screen (too many reflections for me). Now peers around the screen on LHS still not good enough. Can see why so many use helmet cam.
As for sound, I keep a small piece of gaffer / Duct tape stuck to the case, which I place over the mic when filming on bike. Still picks up engine & speech, but the wind is in the background. _________________ Regards Tim,

That looks like one fantastic stretch of road. I don't doubt that it bites a few riders.
What kind of camera are you using? I have a sony hc-1 that I was I have been thinking about mounting to my RS. I am also interested in the new HD Motorsports Hero camera.
Thanks for the video. _________________ Black 1993 K1100RS, BFD |

Is that the camera that got wet? Or a new one? _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Same one. It really didn't get wet. It got about a sprinkle of half of a rain drop on the power button and that freaked it out so would only power up randomly for a while. Wasn't the same for a month or two. Seems OK now though. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

What size memory stick did that video require? _________________ '93 K1100LT

Thanks for the video. |
I've experimented with mounts and camera's and found that XtremeCAM works best. I found this camera kit that plugs into my camcorder and with a power adapter plugs into my BMW accessory outlet. And I have a remote toggle switch for record/pause so I can ride and edit on the fly. The bullet cam is mounted below my RS headlight and tucked underneath. I should post some of the results on YT like DucK1100 did. I used to use a mount like the one in Duck's photo.
I used to mount my Sony D8 and the top piece of my tripod and bolt that to my Reynolds rack for an aft angle and was able to spin it on the go to get side and semi-forward angles. Like yourself, I have an HC1 (HDV) but I would be very careful about what kind of mount I'd connect it to and spare this expensive camera from shock effect over rough road.
I also have a 20/20 helmet cam, but the wiring was very trouble prone, this XtremeCAM has been very reliable and was obviously built to take the shock. I believe it retailed for $250, however I found mine on ebay a year ago brand new for only $110! |
