Hi, (I'm new here.) Does the K1100lt have any fuel switch, bikes used to have "main" and "reserve". (Don't I remember something about airheads having TWO fuel reserves?)
Been putting off looking at the air filter for needing to lift the tank, and not wanting to do something stupid with spilling gas allover the garage.
(J.R. if you are out there, I'm on the east side of town.)

Welcome RI,
Nope, no fuel switch. The k's have a low fuel idiot light that is supposed to light at aprox 1 gal left in the tank.
It operates off the same float rod as the fuel guage, so if anyone has "bent" or modifed the fload rod............your guess could be as good as mine as to when the light would light.
BTW, this question would qualify for the Tech section, not down here in the help.
I think down here would be if someone was having problems with the web site etc.... _________________ Ride safe.

Roy...
I'm sure this thread WILL get moved to the Tech section... BUT to answer Roy's Airhead question: The fact that an Airhead uses two petcocks one on either side of the 'tunnel' ( ie: the tank straddles the center frame forming a well on ether side ) effectively give the Airhead 2 fuel egress points each having two levels on the petcock stem extending upwards into the fuel. The Airhead rider can elect to use either petcock or both. If both petcocks are used, the tank when empty will still have about 3 to 4 liters on each side due to the geometry of the tank. At that point the Airhead rider can switch to the reserve petcock position on one of the petcocks keeping the other side as the "second reserve". If the first position ( 3 liters ) runs dry, he/she still has an additional 3 liters of fuel on the other side with which to find a filling station ! OK...?

Yep, you got it.
The pump will "prime" then stop when you 1st turn on the ing, then will start running again as you start the bike.
On some/most of the older bikes the pump doesn't start at all till you hit the start switch.
Going back to your 1st post, you mentioned about removing the gas tank.
Be warned that as there are no shutoff's in the fuel lines, being a pressurized system(aprox 40psi), the lines will be under pressure for a while after the bike is turned off.
If you are just going after the air filter, it is possible to just lift tank off and set it back towards the seat area without disconnecting the fuel lines.
You will need to disconnect the power connector at the right rear of the tank though. _________________ Ride safe.

And then when your bike won't start, remember to hook it back up. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Hi, Roy,
If I remember correctly, you don't have to raise the tank to get to the air filter. You do, however, need to learn some new curse words, preferably in German. The stock air filter is good for at least 50k miles. Somewhere in that mileage, you might pull it out, tap it on the garage floor to dislodge the twigs and small birds, maybe blow out the dust, then reinstall it. DO NOT make the mistake of installing a K&N air filter. You get no benefit from the K&N, the stock filter filters better, and the stock one is good for at least 50k miles, probably more, unless you ride in VERY dusty conditions. _________________ Ride Safe,

+1 on everything Phil said.
And aside from not filtering as well I think the oil in the K&N tends to dry out quicker than K&N assumes since there's so much heat down there on our bikes. The result is more maintenance (re-oiling) and they don't filter as well as the stocker. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks all. I only just now got brave enuf to lift the back end of the tank. The bike has 87k miles, prev owner said "probably filter has never been replaced". I'm going to look at it, probably going to make a parts order later, need bag hinge & other stuff, don't want to put the order in till I decide whether to get a new stock filter. Thanks for the heads-up over K&N. I downloaded a manual, It doesn't mention any fuel cutoff. _________________ RIP (Roy Parker)
