I saw an ad on the local CL (Craigslist) for a 2000 BMW K1200LT with only 11,000 miles and nicely equipped, ABS, Stereo, heated grips, etc. for only $2,900!

Suspecting a scam, I emailed him to ask if that was a typo on the price or an oveseas scam.

I got this reply:
Quote:
Well first of all, I want to verify that you are a serious person.
I need your mobile phone number, I contact craigslist, they will send you a text message with a code ( like 4503 ), you give me that code, I see that you are a serious person.
I call you, make an appointment and we close a deal.
Interested?
Send me a message with your mobile phone number

This stumped me for a bit, and then I figured it out. By going through this "code" confirmation, he's diverting attention from his legitamacy and questioning yours. Then when you send him your cell number and "he" (not CL) sends you a code, you're led to believe this must be a legit deal. I'm sure the next message involves wire tranfer or a money order of some kind, and the game continues.

I wished him luck with the scam, errr, I mean "sale" and did not provide any further info.

I also noticed his ad has already been removed from Cl.

Sheesh, these guys don't give up. Buyer beware!

Good - you figured it out in time. Usually, if it sounds too good to be true, it is...

I only buy on Craig's List when the seller has been recently transferred to London and has the bike stored in a warehouse where I can't see the bike until after I've paid for it. Laughing

He is using the same system that the red cross is using to transfer money from cell phone users for earth quake relife. If you text the code it will be a cash charge on your cell phone bill and by the time you see it the account it was sent to will be emptyed. It is not a new scam but it is not as popular as some of the others. There is a limit on the amount of cash that can be done this way. So they have to depend on volume to make it worth the effort.

There are some great legitimate deals on the list though. This popped up on my periodic search for bmw:

Very Happy

Hi Jim....

This fellow ( Teilo Niebel ) was a young electrician in the Harz when inherited and renovated his parents home in the early 90s where he started working independently in a adjacent garage. There he started a business restoring vehicles, motorcycles included, which evolved into building these "odd ball" and other unconventional vehicles as well. Today he offers a "limo service" for newly weds, and others, featuring the first DDR (EAST GERMANY) luxury limo, as well as any of the other novelty carts or contraptions he has put together. ( the air-cooled Monster is just for show ) He also offers a service to local town organizers of "Fest-days" or parades, whereby he brings his collection of motorized Novelties to your town and participates in the celebration for the day. As you might not know, in Germany we like to celebrate a lot, nearly every day, so I imagine he is kept quite busy. He bills himself as the "Bike Blacksmith" ( Bike-Schmied ) and mentions that his resource is a 'world fund' of unusual and/or discarded machinery which he then collects and cobbles into these oddities. I suspect however that his main activity is his Motorcycle Restoration business... one article describes several of the completely restored BMWs and Indians he has completed on behalf of customers.

Ok.. Salt-Creek ?? ( Great job with the weight loss BTW !! )

very best regards................// Ernie-NH

Hey, the jacket thing was a long shot anyway. Guess I'll have to spring for a new one.

Here's one I hadn't seen before in response to my ad for a jacket, not a motorcycle!

Gday,

saw the AD you posted on craigslist and I'm very interested in purchasing your motorcycle. Firstly I want to make sure its the same model that my son is after. It's his birthday coming up and I want to make it a surprise for him. I'm a single mom and obviously know nothing about scooters or motorcycles (lol). Anyways here is a video that I copied from my son's computer UPON. Can you please confirm its the same type and reply to me ASAP. I'm willing to pay couple hundred more then what youre asking for as long the motorcycle matches the video description and you can reserve it for me.

Cheers!

Amy.

The UPON is a link. Wonder how this one works. Sometimes I wish I had a second computer just for the purpose of opening suspicious attachments.
