Hey gang,
Look what I found the other day. Cool huh? OK, what the heck is it? Hahaha It's located on the left side of the bike, next to the engine.
I reckon it's some sort of socket (duh) for a trickle charger maybe? If so that's very cool, but well, I don't have any wires for it. I guess when the bike was new it would have come with a wire for an external socket plug? I asked the previous owner and he knows nothing about it.
Anyone know how much a new wire would cost to buy and ship over? Would it be very expensive? Go ahead, socket to me (sorry, couldn't resist). Since I only ride the bike on weekends, if it is for a trickle charger, this would be very useful. Thanks in advance for the info
Cheers!
Chris

Hello!
It is standard accessory power socket with DIN connector (standard for BMW ). AFAIK in default mode it is not directly connected to battery, so wont work as trickle charger. Wiring pars are not cheep http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.do?model=0522&mospid=47927&lang=enUS&hg=61.
If you want to use it as you said I would go for soldering iron and make a direct (via fuse of course) connection do battery. In my bike I have one socket connected as factory set-up and second one to battery, so I choose whether I want my devices to be on only with ignition or all the time.
Best regards,

Unless it's a U.S. thing, (or an LT thing) both of my powerlet outlets, 1 on the dash pad and the other on the L.H. side, are both hot at all times.
I use them for a trickle charger as well whem I'm not riding it.
When I'm riding I use them for accy power in my tank bag and I also use them for my Gerbing gear.
Chris, the male connector that fits it is about $15 U.S.
Some members have just hard wired a SAE pigtail for their charger and don't use the bmw powerlet outlet. _________________ Ride safe.

Hi Chris
Welcome to the world of BMW's and all their fun little extras.
Undo the two phillips screws in the photo and check for the wiring at the back of the plug. If it is wired then it is directly into the loom and a fused curcuit. This is trickle charge able with a "Hella style" plug on the end of an Optimate style charger. The plugs are usually a few £'s each here in the UK.
It is used for a variety of things such as heated jackets, ha, ha, GPS etc.
If you are lucky you have a couple of these a la LT's. If you do not have the wiring them you can wire them straight to the battery with a fuse inline. the BMW plug pins are a bit akward though so many people fit aftermarket ones as a spare.
After BMW's, other bikes without sockets are a PIA.
Cheers

Thanks so much for all the feedback fellas, really, much appreciated! I'll check if it's wired...I think I can manage to undo 2 screws without the bike falling to bits, haha
So next question, if I do want to use it as a trickle charger, and not for accessories (Malaysia's average temperature is 33-Degrees C daily, I don't need a heated jacket, I need an air-conditioned one!) can I buy the bits for it on-line?
Thanks again guys!
Cheers!

You can get the plugs from various sources including ebay. They are known as Hella plugs _________________ K1100RS Special Edition 1997

So that will cost 2x more than BMW to buy then if that's the case. _________________ Ride safe.

Actually, the JD brand is (or at least was- years ago) about 1/3 to 1/2 the price of BMWs plugs and sockets. The JD was also a lot nicer materials in the socket part. It even had a little deer on the spring-loaded cover. That kinda messed up some people who were looking my bike over in parking lots.
I think you ask for the 'utility plug/socket' when ordering.

As per my previous post search for Hella plug on ebay.com and you will see a variety of plugs, leads etc compatible with the BMW Accessory Socket. Many at reasonable prices. _________________ K1100RS Special Edition 1997

WooHoo, something I can help with, new as I am.
Collected mine having checked with seller beforehand if there was a cigar socket for the GPS, yes he says, Great I say, get there and it's the smaller Hella type, Arse I say etc etc
Anyhow, theres one on my handlebar shroud and one on the side panel.
Chances are you'll want to actually power something which has a standard Cigar lighter socket?
If so you need one of these, (which I've just ordered),
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300284154286&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
I thought i'd stumbled on a lucky find after opening the radio cover to find in addition to these a cigar lighter socket, wahey, which has no power to it, not hugely surprising considering the radio doesn't either, oh well, first night of journey back I stayes with friends and accompanied said friend to Maplin the following morning for him to get a power pack for his mic, (he's a singer).
When I got home, struggling to use the GPS solely when necessary to preserve battery power, I started thinking of changing the socket on the bar shroud to a standard one and found the adapter as shown above, and guess where I found the first one whilst searching?, yep, Maplins, where I could have gotten one before continuing.
Oooh yes, FWIW, these plugs are fitted to Honda touring bikes, Caravans, apparently HGV's? and oddly enough early Czech Skoda's before they became Volkswagen, the original tool kits included a lamp with one of these plugs. |

Found one here!!!
Hey guys, believe it or not, I managed to find the attachment for the socket over here, surprise surprise! There's a shop selling BMW bike parts that opened up recently, but mostly stuff for newer BMWs, this socket however seems to have remained unchanged for some time, so it fits my '93 K. Took it home and tried it, it works! Now I just got to find something to plug into it....
They also have a trickle charger that connects to this socket directly to a powerpoint, new. It's not BMW Motorrad branded tho, hence a lot cheaper I reckon. That charger comes with an adaptor that can be used for cars too, and a greed-red LED 'charging' light. Any idea how much that costs over there?
Here's the adaptor for the socket...

The plug (like the one on the left) that goes into the accessory socket are commonly available in most auto shops here, also in the 4WD or camping shops as they are commonly used for camping fridges. They take a larger load than the common cigarette plug and most importantly for 4WD driving they don't shake loose over rough ground.
The plug alone here is about A$7-8 at most, sometimes cheaper. They were originally designed by Hella I think, so maybe a Hella dealer can get them.
I bought a new camping fridge a month ago and it had a plug that could be used in either this type of socket or a normal cigarette lighter socket. _________________ K1100RS '97

| I always use that thing to charge my cell phone, I Pod, batteries... when I go camping. Works great. I plug it in and put it in the storageroom in the tail when I drive so it will not drain the battery to much. |
