Well said Ausbrick and RAL88, I agree, the criticism and chatroom crap has been getting progressively worse over the past couple of years. Those that are 'disturbed by the whining' should stop the criticism and accept that other people have have opinions and views and they shouldn't be criticised for expressing them.
Personally, I rarely get onto the forum anymore because I got fed with the criticism and as a result many mods I have done have not been shared. Strangely my biggest critciser seams to be accepting some of my mods that I copped shit over.
It would be great for the forum to get back to where it was, a place to share ideas, knowledge and mods (as weird as some are) without the threat of being criticised.

Hi gents - thanx for leaping to my defence - but I take ALL postings at face value, and if neccessary can give as good as I get. Wink

The problem with the written word is that there is no body language [ body English?] to support the MEANING. Many times I've read a fax, e-mail and initially had a minor internal explosion - then read it again and then you can see 2,3 ....4 possible meanings, and if the real meaning is ambiguous, ask for clarification. I don't even bother with phone texts.

"What do you want to do that for?" Beemered

1. Genuine enquiry, as the questioner wishes to be enlightened, or maybe has an interest to do the same thing themselves. Laughing

2. Sarcastic comment, real meaning - the questioner knows far more than you - so why are you bothering - or Rolling Eyes

3. Sarcastic comment but in reality the questioner knows farg all about the topic and in reality has no interest and really just wants to wind you up. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

4. Jocular - supportive from someone who KNOWS you have the capability of doing "IT" and is having a laugh with you for all the work you are going to create for yourself. Cool

OH and I guess a #5 - If the question is asked by a Police Officer - you better have a good response!

there's maybe more, but why would I want to find them.....because [ oh no]

As an English graduate [ and commercial author ] I try to make my written words as clear as possible the first time round. I HAVE become lazy in my use of English, but never the less still try. Wink

In conclusion - I take no offence at the one liners - here or elsewhere, I enjoy the odd bit of sarcasm [ as long as the perpetrator can take it as well] - and certainly will continue to ask questions that ellicit the response "Why"..............

BTW way - you can always pick out your own [ from 1 thro' 4 ] reasons for asking????? Laughing

I think an oiler cooler would cool things down considerbly.. I stuck one on my Hadley and it cooled the engine about 50 degrees. In fact I have to shut it of in the winter.

It may work too good on a K. so a correct thermostat might be nessary. Not to mention how to hook one up. May be a can of worms, maybe not.

The Hadley and the K are two different animals. Thank goodness!

Is the Harley air cooled? On a K the coolant thermostat would still keep the bike in the same temp range. Personally I wouldn't want the engine to run cooler than the design temp.

However, an oil cooler might be a way to lessen some of the heat transferred to the rider by the radiator and fan.

The Harley is air cooled. Thats what I meant by the "different animal" comment. I think some water cooled bikes also have oil coolers.

As you said, it may help with the rider heat issues.
Being air cooled, the Harley runs best between 180*-220*. Below that water does not vaporize and sludge raises it's ugly head. Over 220 and engine parts degrade. My particular Harley runs at the very highest around 240* on a real HOT summer day. So that's why I installed the oil cooler.

I know this isn't a Harley forum so please forgive my comparisons, but I thought I'd give my 1 cent.

I'm sure BMW would have added a cooler if nessesary but I also think they don't have too many 100* days in Germany, either.

So it seems the issue would be to see if a cooler would provide enough cooling to affect the riders comfort and still run in the acceptable temperature range to ensure long engine life. I just don't know.

How's that for a rambling bulls**t opinion!

It will be real interesting to see if Beachcomer comes up with something.

Well I suppose that if the engineers had designed the block and oil pan without the "cooling" fins they may have had an external oil cooler instead.

I've always thought the issue with K heat is that there's nowhere for the air to go. Sure the fairing lowers are vented but the air is pushed straight up and back and onto the underside of the tank where it "turbulates" around before it goes out of the fairing vents EVENTUALLY after leaving a lot of heat in the bike.

The Johnny blanket helps by insulating the tank and side panels a bit better but the air is still doing the same thing. Turbulating behind the fan.

The relay box is also essentially a wall that traps heat. Probably not feasible on an ABS II bike but one idea I have is to "compress" the relay box somehow and duct some heat out the back, maybe even with a small assist fan at one end of the ducting. You could just close the ducting in cooler months.

Or having two fans behind the radiator in a V that push the heated air to the side. Though that's probably not possible given space limitations.

Another idea I've toyed is getting some quality thin 5" fans from SPAL or somebody to install on each vent to help get the heat out of there but then I wonder if vortexes would end up just cooking your calves instead of your thighs.

I've got a 7 inch reversible radiator fan that I plan to experiment with on my RS. Since it's reversible I may try having it push air and see how that works out. Once at speed you don't really need the fan so that MIGHT work to get heat out of the front at lower speeds when the fan kicks in. (OR maybe the fan pushes already - can't remember off the top of my head.)

How's THAT for rambling? Laughing

Far from rambling Duck - it's very informative, for stock bikes of course! Laughing

I WILL have a similar problem [ probably] with my Race Rep which has a very close fitting Yamaha R6 fairing. Most current Jap Rice Rockets have internal ducting now for that very reason [ getting the heat out ].
I still fancy those sexy cut-outs that Cobas and Brune use which exposes the valve cover / "sump" through the fairing lower.

I did a lot of work with air cooled engines in the past 25 years [ VW and Porsche] and I developed an electrical fan conversion for the 4 cylinder engines. The fan sat in a Porsche upright shroud and was governed by 3 temp sensors. This was in 356 Speedster and 550 Spyder replicas.

Another Kay forum is currently running a thread to replace the OEM fan with an upgraded aftermarket unit - that is also half the cost. Not sure what the protocol is about giving out other forum addresses ????

Re: "will it, won't it" - BMW sorted it out for the K1200, so I guess it's a "will". Cool

It has been said that it is easier to seek forgiveness than permission Smile Inquiring minds etc. There have been links to other forums as sources of information in here.

No protocol that I know of. Although linking to porn sites or a KKK forum might be a bit over the top.

Well, It looks like we are reading the same set of forums Wink.
BTW as we speak, I am waiting for the package with mentioned fan - it will be coupled with 3 core radiator. Such upgrade is well documented on K11OG, I don't see the resistance against it among Flying Brick brothers...

BMW owners have not yet got into the "rip it apart and make something different" mentality that I was brought up on. Wink

Indeed one of the forums [ UK ] took great offence when I started posting about converting Airheads to Flat Trackers, and Kays to Streetfighters !!!!!!

But if we don't try the alternate path - we'll never know. Pioneering spirit eh? Twisted Evil

The fan I'm going to try in my RS was only $35 shipped. I'm pretty sure it's the same one Larry's been using. Claims 1100 CFM.

The fan in the picture looks identical to the one I bought from Summit Racing and am using on the RS /EML rig. Also have an adjustable thermostatic switch, one where the probes slips inside the radiator hose.

I did manage to mount the fan without removing the radiator. (With the sidecar support running in front of the radiator it would have invlolved removing the sidecar subframe.) It can be done, but I don't recommend it, had to remove the whole airbox.

I agree, I get lots of

Quote:
"What do you want to do that for?"

when I'm at BMW events. I usually tell them "To make it go faster."

Many BMW owners seem to feel the bikes were perfect when they left the factory, all that is needed is to mount a GPS and a few other farkels. Maybe yor perfect is different from mine.

When I have to get the rig inspected I take it to one of the local "biker" shops, as opposed to "Chopper" shops. They seem to better understand and appreciate the whole idea of modifying something to get what you want, even if its not what they would have built.

Plus I have had "motorcycle" shops refuse to do inspections on the rig even if by law its no different than two wheeler. Its too far off from what they understand.

Maybe the fact that I still have a rigid framed Triumph in the barn means I'm just a little off.

For those new here, here's a link to an article about my rig.

At the risk of repetition - Hot Rodders were around a long time before restorers.....................................................................

There is NO such thing as the perfect factory motorcycle - I challenge ANY forum member to tell us they have made no changes to their bikes from the showroom floor spec.

We ALL modify our machines - it's just the degree of modification that seems to alienate some. Me - I like a LOT of modification.

Michael,

I use the siliconeintakes fan, the 7" model wired to pull. I also use the adjustable thermostatic switch with capillary probe.

OK - we looked at the K1200 components today and initially it all looks good. That depends on a regular source of 1200 pump assemblies [ secondhand of course ] as to whether it's a viable swap.

I thought it would probably work, let me know what you find out.

Thanks

Mike

The K12 pump swap over to a K1100 block will work. Under normal operating conditions an oil cooler for the K1100 is of no real value-add. However, for a sidecar rig or turbo or K12RS engine swap it does make a difference, especially if the cooler is fan cooled. The oil cooler on the K12 (not fan cooled) provides approximately 25-30 degrees f lower oil temp, and 8 degrees f lower system temp, while improving oil pressure by 5-8 psi. With fan cooling system temp ccould easily be reduced another 10 degrees and could also be manually controlled.

At idle the cooler has no significant effect. Without air passing over it acts as a heat sink.

The cooler on the K12 is a 4 row Jagg model. The oil cooler layer on the engine has a built in thermostat that opens @ 85c or 185 degrees f.

The K12 does not radiate heat to the rider nor does the fuel tank heat up on hot days because of the openess of the engine bay.

Hey Larry,

many thanx for the detailed info and installation pix - boy do I love these forums !!

I have a choice of several leftover oil cooler rads from my Circuit Racing days, and based on your data I can choose one that will give me the desired cooling. I've sourced a couple of neat little Turbo Intercoolers and will look at incorporating one into the package.
