|
|
I am in the process of installing the factory heated grip kit. The real expensive factory unit, that came with a new set of handlebars and everything. Don't ask, they were a gift.
I am looking for the wiring in the loom under the tank, I know it is there, as I remember seeing it. (ran out of time this morning before work). The factory wire connector that mates to the grips, has two separate connectors on it, a small two wire plug and a larger four wire plug. When I put the kit on my K100, I only remember it having a 4 wire plug. I do not see a place for the small 2 wire plug? Anyone else seen this? Any clues?
Thanks for any advice.

Slightly more rearward than the other plugs, about 2/3'rds of the way toward the rear of the tank, might be under the frame tube, left side. _________________ Steve

Not trying to piss in your cornflakes Chris, but it's too bad your "gift" wasn't an aftermarket set of heated grips.
Most people with the BMW set have had a failure and one failure even let to a meltdown of the entire wiring harness.
I think you might be safe because of redesign and the newness of it. (most failures were caused by flimsy design out of the gate and 15+ years of use) _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

OTG:
Are you just hanging around to shit on BMW every chance you get?
It's getting old.
I bought a 170k K75RT that had working heated grips. I moved them over to my bike and they kept working for another 20k or so until I crashed it and parted it.
Yes, they do have a failure rate but it's nowhere near as high as you'd like to pretend. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

C'mon man you should know me better by now. Even with your rose-colored glasses you have to admit the original heated grips are flimsy at best.
Hell you even made a poll about it.

I could see you getting your panties in a bunch if I was here just bashing BMW constantly, but nothing could be further from the truth so drop the venom, ok? I'm offering my opinion based on my personal experience. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

OK OTG - so your BMW heated grips failed. That doesn't mean that most of everyone else's did.
Yeah, there's a poll - but the failure rate reported here seems to be fairly low. _________________ Jim

What ratio is enough for you? 30%? 20%?
What is a "high" failure rate?
Let me guess....the same number of people that have/had fairing bracket cracks or main seal oil leaks.
What is this, Mod gang up on OTG day?

Boy this thread spun out of control right quick. I was just wondering where the second plug plugged in (black plug). I only remember 1 plug with my other set of grips. I am happy that I got the factory grips.
Thanks for the help.

Let's put the disagreements to bed folks - it is never a great idea to criticize a purchase after it is made, nor is it a great idea to let things get personal. This board is flame-free, was made that way and will continue on that way
I put the BMW Heated grip set on my K11RS and LOVED it, was the single best thing I did to it. Just be exceedingly careful when installing, the fine and somewhat fragile wires can get kinked very easily when threading them through the bars (something that can lead to failure). The wire connection at the grip is also not what I would call "overbuilt" so don't tug on them (yes, from my K75S heated grip install, don't ask me how I know!) If you use the zip-ties, make sure to fully lock to lock the handlebars to make sure there is plenty of slack and no pulling, that will also lead to wire chaffing and failure. It was some time ago so I am not sure if I remember two separate connections for the grips themselves, maybe one for the switch and one for the grips?
In all I did this on both my K75S and my K11RS and was thrilled with the clean and stock look, and MAN do those things heat up on the high setting!
That said, my new-to-me K75RT has them from the factory _________________

Found your answer on the IBMWR tech site, this article:
| Quote: | Fit the 3 position switch into the switch panel. Route the switch lead with the grip wires forward and down to the main left hand loom which disappears under the tank. At this point it is necessary to lift (but not remove) the tank. By lifting the rear of the tank from its locating positions on the frame and gently easing it backwards, it can be lifted away from the frame giving access (from a kneeling position) to the looms under the tank. An assistant is necessary to hold the tank away (resting most weight still on the right hand frame member) whilst you access the loom.
In the loom is a connector to match the one on the 3rd piece of the grip wiring. It is about half way along the loom under the tank. It is a T connection. Push the connectors together and then fit the grip wires into the 4 pin connector on the grip loom. This connector at first seems to have 5 wires going into 4 pins from the back. It is actually 2 black (earth) wires and one live (brown) which then feeds the fourth pin from the third pin. Use female spade connectors on the end of the grip wires to connect into this 4 pin connector - black to black, brown to brown.
The last connection should be the switch wire to the grip loom - this will only fit one way round. |
My own article there skips the switch install unfortunately, though it is covered in the "Parts you should have in front of you":
| Quote: | * 2 grips with wires attached
* various screws (2 to anchor the left, the right depends on whether you have a 16 or 8-valve k)
* small white "lock block" that the ends of the wires plug into
* switch
* pigtail with three connectors (one for the switch, one for the lockblock holding the grip wires, and one either to the power lead or to a second pigtail that goes from the first pigtail to the power lead.)
* bunch of zip-ties
* random other stuff. |

I love the ones I put on my K100, and yeah, I also learned the hard way about how fragile they are at the grip end. I actually had to re-solder a wire that I ripped off, and they have worked great, for about 5 years now.

Thanks Ted, I must be brain dead, the white plug goes to the dash switch....Black to power plug. I was looking for 2 plugs in the loom...only remebering one. Now I have to find it...it is hiding. Thanks for help. _________________ 1994 K1100RS

LoL, yes it does that. Mine have both been overtaped so the loom looks like a boa that just swallowed a pig. It should be in the loom running down the left frame rail, about mid-point. _________________

Hi guys....I still cannot find the plug for these grips. I just spent almost an hour looking for it. I have even started cutting away the black cloth tape wrap looking for it. I am under the left frame rail, under the tank about half way...and I see nothing. My previously very neat job of wiring up my autoswitch and HID's has all been pulled apart, so I could see better. I am ALMOST at the point of cutting off the plug and hard wiring it in.
Does anyone remember if it is before the large "arm" of wires that is terminated with wire nut looking heat shrink? I am assuming that it is between the power distribution box and that arm of the loom.
Thanks...this should not be this frustrating. _________________ 1994 K1100RS

It MAY be under tape so look for suspicious lumps.
Keep hunting, it's there. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Take a look at this:
I believe it is the pigtail hanging down just to the left of the #9 - both of mine were taped over with the pigtail on the bottom of the loom, hence you look for and feel for the pig in the boa lump. It should be taped over with a separate piece of tape so you don't need to cut anything, just find the tape and unravel the piece. _________________

I wish I could help you more, mine was pretty easy to find, actually I found it before I knew what it was, asked here and was told what it was.
My only suggestions are, again, that it is a small plug that comes out of the wrapped wires on the left side by itself about 2/3's the way toward the rear of the tank. It comes out by it's lonesome before the more forward mess of wires emerges.
As others here have suggested, maybe it got wrapped up and is hiding under the tape.
Good luck! _________________ Steve
