Got my Medicare card in the mail, and so I've got to do things while I can. My friends along the Columbia are planning a 8-day ride through western Canada this summer and it's something we're going to do, even though I'll have to tow the Light Truck to Wenachee.

But I am now fretting about the details since I have this not-well-understood technological dependency: I assume I'll have to talk to my cell-phone provider about what it will cost me to make calls from Canada and I'll also assume that the internet is the internet and so if I can get on it in Canada it's just like being at home. (If anyone has information to the contrary, let me know, PLEASE).

The one remaining issue is this: this group has used bike-to-bike comms on all of its previous trips: we use the FRS/GMRS systems (Chatterbox, Motorolas and Kenwoods) that have a couple of common frequencies. Does anyone know the rules of engagement for such comms in Canada?

Thanks.

And BTW, while we don't have any dates, we do have a map-set of the proposed routes, and I'll be happy to e-mail them to anyone who'd be interested. The rally and end-points will be Sun Cove, WA (north of Wenatchee).

Depending on who your cell phone provider is, it can cost an arm and a small leg to call in Canada. I found it cheaper to buy a US pay as you go phone and then use a US calling card to make calls in and from CA to the US. For instance, AT&T wants 79 cents a minute - too much! Or, for a mere $4.99 for a month, you can buy an "international plan" - that knocks the price per minute all the way down to 59 cents - generous - aren't they???

The FRS radios aren't a problem - they sell them at Costco up there - same as here...

Thanks.

It's surprising how, over the last decade, I've become dependent upon instantaneous comms across vast geographic areas. It became invaluable when I was trying to lead an organization covering the Northwest and when in turn I had to communicate with folks nationwide.

But then I became a junkie: I live in El Paso while my kids(?) are more than six hundred miles away (and my older friends from army days anywhere west of the Mississippi) and I now simply assume that I can gain contact with the press of a few keys.

So I'll have to prepare myself for 8 days of isolation from that convenience. My plan is to leave a message on my phone that says folks should e-mail me and I'll get back to them when we settle down for the night on our route.

Gotta get that "instantaneous gratification" stuff out of my system!

I'd call that eight days of blissful peace and enjoy it!
