I searched for this, but the most useful thread simply told the OP not to remove the gas from the tank.
I'm going to be sending it out for repair, so that is not an option.
I presume that once I disconnect the supply hose to the fuel rail, that I could put the supply line into a 5 gallon gas can and just let the fuel pump pump it into the can.
Is this a fair assumption?

I find it's easiest to remove the gas cap altogether (the four small screws around the perimeter) and then siphon the gas out. The last little bit is hard to get, but with the cap removed, it easier to see the innards and where the gas is.
Once most of the gas is out, remove the tank and tilt it front end up and the rest of the gas will be at the rear, siphon again and then I stick some wadded up paper towels in there to get that last little bit. (be careful with the paper towels afterwards). Then disconnect the fuel lines and then remove the fuel gauge sender unit (four large philips screws underneath the tank).
You'll also need to remove the fuel filter from the hard line it's attached to and the fuel pump as well. Tip on that, the fuel pump comes out easily by squeezing the two plastic tabs on either side of the white bracket and then lifting gently upward. No need to remove the eight little bolt nuts attaching it to the bracket (damhik!).
Good luck with the repair, remember the tank is aluminum! _________________ Steve

Also when you pull the pump assy out, be careful with the sock on the suction/pickup end of the pump. It can tear easy at the seams if your too rough. damhik. _________________ Ride safe.

Having drained 7 tanks in the past 18 months - here's my method.
Remove tank, get a large tun dish [ funnel] and a suitable sized can.
Open gas cap [ or remove ] - invert tank over funnel and Robert's your Pater's Sibling. 5 Minutes max and no horrible petrol taste in the mouth for hours !!!

I never understood sucking on the end of the hose - just feed the entire hose into the tank holding on to one end. When the whole thing is in there except the inch or so at the end you are holding onto, pinch it and pull out the now full hose leaving a foot or so in the tank so it reaches all the way to the bottom. Point into a container, release the pinch and instant siphon, no sucking, no gas mouth  _________________

Actually, if you use a clear hose, and understand the laws of fluid dynamics, you'll never get that anyway. I'm probably not qualified to give a lesson on fluid dynamics today (you've already outlined another solution using those laws), so here is a link to the wiki:

So, the tank is now empty, except for a very small amount of gaz. The siphon thing I bought - the bulb is useless, so I provided a very small amount of suction to complete the circuit. The hose attached to all of these devices is always coiled up, so it won't go straight into the places where you want to point it. My solution was to take a wire hanger, cut a length with some wire cutters and straighten it, then attach to the end of the hose, making sure to leave about 1 - 1 1/2" of hose sticking out so that you don't go scraping the inside of the tank and cause a spark. I then used some wire ties to hold about a foot or so of the curling hose straight. Works like a charm.
If you leave a small section of the wire hanger curled up at the end sticking outside, you can use that as a sort of handle to guide the end of the hose. You can also use it as a hook to keep it from going into the tank. _________________ 79 Honda CB750 trainer

Every time I picture that in my head, I picture the funnel casually falling out of the gas can, and dumping petrol all over the garage floor, me dropping the tank or having it slip out of my hands, it hits the garage floor, the gas ignites from a spark and explodes, sets the A4 on fire, which emits all sorts of very foul carcinogenic fumes before exploding in a ball of flames, setting the apartment building on fire, killing my neighbors, wife and 2 cats, setting fire to a house across the street, which then sets fire to all of the other houses on the block, eventually reaching the railroad bridge a quarter mile away, melting the girders and causing it to collapse and the next train coming through to derail, killing dozens of innocent bystanders and sending a huge ball of flames from the diesel tanks, setting fire to the houses on the other side of the tracks, and basically destroying half of the country.
Naturally, I'm already snuffed and couldn't give a rat's arse by this time...

What to do with the odd "drips"?
As I sent two of the tanks off for stripping and polishing I needed every single drop out - as opposed to 99.9999%.
So, while still upside down, I put some clean rag in and soaked the remainder up. Voila.
Haven't burned down any of my neighbours garages / houses / cats yet!!!
