Hey- my very first post here-

I use a sidecar rig as a mini work truck. They work great for what I do, and have the magical power of turning a PO'ed customer into a curious kid.

I've had 2 Ural rigs and am currently scooting around on a 1981 R100RT with a Ural sidecar stuck to it. It works great, no issues, dirt simple, etc.

Because I'm dumb (and want more power, brakes, amps, etc), I'm still looking to upgrade my rig. I'm pretty well settled on a K1100LT.

A friend of a friend is a sidecar nut. Some unknown time ago he collected a 1994 K1100 / EML sidecar ($$$$) rig. 200,000 + miles. He also gathered a 1995 K1100, wrecked, with about 30,000 on the odo, with the plan of getting one good runner outta the mix.

He has not gotten to it and will give me a nice price on the whole. He is a stand up guy, etc.....

As of yet, I have not looked at said pile-O-parts.

Anyhow, am I INSANE for considering this? Money wise, I'm basically buying the sidecar & getting the bikes as a bonus. I'm a pretty fair wrench and can usually understand and follow the manual (not always a good thing).

Thoughts?

Sounds like more of an engine/drive train/wiring harness swap than a frame swap since you want to take the low mile goodies from the wrecked bike and swap them over to the sidecar rig, right?

I assume that the sidecar rig has a clean title and the wrecked bike has a salvage title.

No, you're not insane. A fair amount of work involved but it should be pretty straightforward since you're dealing with a 94 and 95. I've built a few Ks by merging bikes. It's not terribly complicated, just time consuming.

Chuck

Makes sense to me. I'd go with Drake's advice and look at it as a drivetrain swap, or at least a motor / tranny swap.

Which EML car are you looking at?

Does it have the leading link front end and 14" wheels all around?

One thing to watch for is the final drive, the EML setup does away with the paralever, and involves (if I remember) some machining to the final dirve casing. This is supposedly stronger. ( I have seen several other K bike hacks that retain the paralever so it may not be that big a deal)

All in all I've been very happy with my setup. (except when I'm riding with my buddies with ZX-14, Concours 1400, FJR 1300, and Hayabusa sidecar rigs, then I wish I had about 60 more horsepower)

If you get an EML manual I'd sure like to see it..............

See the sidecar attachment thread here for some links to pictures of my set up.

Good Luck

Mike

Thanks all!

I read thru the creation of the K75F. Looks do-able.

I looked at some of the higher power options for a tug. I want an upright riding position and lots of amps. I ride my rigs all year in Michigan, sometimes 2 up. Lots of electric gear. The K bike looks like the best mix without doing some fairly serious customizing.

Now if I can make a deal......
