Guys,
My garage door opener broke so Ziggy spent 48 hours on my driveway which has a small incline. I noticed this morning she had peed on the driveway. I've seen an occasional spot on my garage floor but this is a lot of fluid. Looked grimy (blackish).
Then when I put a paper napkin on it I figured out it was reddish in color so it must be transmission fluid (I use red BMW 75W140 in my tranny, yellowish 80W90 in my final drive and Mobil 1 15W-50 in my engine).
I got on the bike and the minute I got it upright more fluid poured out!
It is certainly coming out of the "weep hole"
This was as of 5 min ago. I'm trying to figure out how to deal with this......

Its going to be Input shaft seal I recon, I dont think that the clutch operating rod has gearbox oil seal but it might have, Either way its going to be Tranny off

IIRC the clutch pushrod does have a tiny seal.

Guys,
Thanks for the replies.
Why would it fail so abruptly? Why did it fail only 25K miles after the last replacement? Can I ride it ~30 miles thru the hills to my nearest independent wrench?
The last time I had a weep hole leak was at 30K miles and 7 years ago. The BMW stealer charged 9 hrs of labor and they replaced the clutch while they were in there (told me that there was oil on the clutch). Replaced transmission input seal, real main seal.
This sounds like a $1500 hit. I'm bummed.

Find an independent wrench if you don't want to do it yourself. They work ALOT cheaper.

Most likely input seal.
There is s small seal on the rear of the clutch rod but I don't think it would leak that much which is why I guess input seal.
The tranny does not need to be removed for the push rod seal as it's inside the rear boot.
Top if off and I think you should be good for only 30 miles. The thing you have to consider is where that oil goes if it leaks out while you're riding. (Rear tire.) I think a cork or rubber stopper in the weep hole might be a good idea.
I don't know though, that looks like a lot of oil.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all of your input. Helps me negotiate better with the mechanics.
I think I'm going to top off the tranny, carry spare fluid and brave the 30 mile ride thru the mountains. I've ridden in rainstorms before and do plan to take it easy. Ducks stopper cork is a good idea. I'll likely stop and check for oil on rear tire partway through the trip.
I'll also try a 5 mile test run close to my house before heading for the mountains.
I will not make this trip till next weekend so if you guys come up with any other ideas I'm all ears (just check out my Avataar!)

Just a thougt here, when you were parked on the drive way, was the bike parked forward "downhill", and is the transmission overfilled with oil that it could have pooled at the front seal and leaked out?
I'm not sure where the normal fill level is in relation to the shaft seal, but it was a thought.
Something to ponder.

Interesting question.
It was parked with the forward facing uphill. I changed transmission oil in December and measured what I filled so no it was not overfilled.
I do wonder though whether
a) This is a leak I can live with
b) Why the hell did it open up suddenly
c) Did it have anything to do with bike being parked on an incline?
Once I get the garage door fixed later this week I plan to roll the bike in and at least do a mass balance on how much oil is still in there.

No, that's not it. The seal seals all of the way around. When I got my RS, the complete frickin' morons in the service department at Ventura BMW had recently FILLED the tranny, as in to the brim. I rode all of the way to my buddy's place in SF from Malibu up Hwy 1 before I had a chance to give the bike a onceover and discover this.

Thanks Jim,
On the eve of pouring more $ into it is a perfect time to remind myself how much I've enjoyed this bike over the years.

Thanks for your support!
Took me a month but Ziggy is back up and running. Picked her up and decided to go on an impromptu 150 mile ride along the Pacific. It was surprisingly cold (50's) for this time of the year but I had a wonderful ride.
Going to try and connect with Flying Duck and Roy in Sacramento next weekend.
