Pull the mirrors apart to get them painted without cracking them, I have pulled them off the fairing?

They normally fall apart quite easily when they get knocked off the bike
They appear to be glued together - I assume you mean the front half and the back half of the mirror pod?
I glued mine back after a minor spill with epoxy glue.
Why not just mask off the glass and repaint as is - I assume they are similar to K1100RS mirrors _________________ K1100RS Special Edition 1997

If you just want the glass out, fold a towel, put it on your bench and then smack the mirror glass side down on the towel. Mirror will pop out. Really. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

You have to smack them down pretty hard to get the mirror to pop out. SOMETIMES you can pry them out but it's risky so I always use the slam technique. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I was able to get one out using the slam but could not get the other to budge. Of course I broke the mirror trying to pry it out.
It was actually quite a bugger to get the new glass in. I used one of those rubber sanding blocks wrapped in a shop towel to put the new glass in. The sanding block conforms to the mirror shape and cuts down on point loading.

You just need to slam it down harder. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Are you serious about this method? I'm not joking? Is it like a clip in system?

Yeah, he's serious. That's how you get the glass out. Put a folded towel on a hard surface and slam it down hard - the glass will pop out. As the OP pointed out - if you try to pry the glass out, it will crack. _________________ Jim

Yes, as Jim pointed out, I'm very serous. It does take a lot of courage to take a $400 BMW part and smash the living f*** out of it but it DOES work and has a much better chance of success than prying it out. I've got the parts receipts to prove it. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Well I'm about to get a parts receipt aswell, the right mirror came out after the first 6 hits, the left mirror, no way was it going to move, so I did the cardinal sin and you guessed it, broke the mirror, "That's Life" but in the right mirror there were tubular sponges, 4 of them, in the left none.
I'll try a glass place for the replacement first.

You can buy replacement glass from BMW. I think they are around $35.

Speaking of mirrors. Has anyone noticed that the left and right sides seem to have different shapes? On my bike it really seems like my right side mirror gets the "Objects in this mirror are closer" thing, while the left appears normal.
Just curious if I am the only one getting this? _________________ 1997 K1100LT

They're the same part so maybe someone modified one of yours. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
