Hey Rob,

Glad you managed to keep the bike upright, well done! Wheels locking up on me for no reason whatsoever and with no warning really scare the crap out of me...and my bike's a 1993 as well!

Gonna get mine checked out again, apparently it was fine before I took delivery of it, but that was before some long distance rides. FD's can be serviced right?

Chris

Well, I'm not sure what you would call service. I had the final drive on the K overhauled - some bearings and bushings replaced.

The tricky part is getting the preload set right - apparently that's where the factory fell down on at least some of the bikes.

OMG, how scary was that.

Has anyone produce a maintenance "how to" check list to help us identify any early warning symptoms, such as how much backlash at the rear wheek should there be when in 1st gear? Is it possible to listen for rumbling and clunking (say with a tube or stethoscope type device) against he shaft housing. What the right oil levels are etc....

I believe Paul Glaves listed some checks in an article in the BMWON and I think over on the MOA web site.

The shaft is dry, splines are lubed by grease and the bearings in the joints are "sealed for life"

My 1991 K100RS did the same thing but didn't lock up. It had 50K on the clock.

This is scary sh1t guys.... I'm freaked. So would it be advisable to replace / overhaul the shaft every 50k? (err, is that miles or kilometres?)

(runs away and hides, quivering)

I'm no expert but I wonder if incorrect u-joint phasing could be a cause?

Just heard from a K100RS4V owner looking for a drive shaft since his rear U-joint 'sploded. IIRC though, his bike has oodles of miles on it.

My front U-Joint let go at 94K miles. No dicernable warning I believe .Just crusing along Hwy 5 . Fully loaded headed south near Coalinga here in CA. and
"Bam" Garble..Garble one or 2 "WTF!?!"

Lost all gear oil. When I got it apart I could see diintegrated front U joint bits all over the bell housing along with the Festive Aqua Blue Transmission seal. The cover was split from about "7 to 11". Must have bound the output shaft and the gears tried to jump out of the case. Was extremely lucky it did not lock up.
Replaced with used (appearantly rebuilt trans.) + complete shaft. (was very lucy.. $400. delivered off E-Bay) Inspected by BMW Master tech b4 install.
Did clutch disk while was there. (was soaked in oil) but only 40K old.

Phased DS... 2000 miles so far. 49er last weekend, MOA next month, Tow insurance in hand and a fresh set of tires.
Yes I was dissapointed, but it seems all vehicles have a weak spot.

I saw in an earlier post that these FD's are 'sealed units'? Or did I read wrongly? So can they be taken apart simply to inspect the condition of the components within, and then put back together again if all is okay in there, or would taking it apart entail changing stuff (gaskets, bearings, etc etc). Sorry, this FD thing's got me a bit paranoid Shocked

Chris, the final drives can be disassembled and inspected but I would think it would be difficult to do properly with out space, time, tools, and patience.

Now the drive shaft is a different issue.
About all you can do is to visually inspect it for evidence of heating/blueing, notchy u-joints, tearing rubber insert, condition of splines. That's about it.
The u-joints aren't intended to be replaced based upon how they were installed originally. You basically just replace the entire drive shaft assy.

Thanks a lot for the info Scott!

I just got the bike back from the shop last week, had to get the headlight replaced and lower fairing metal bracket welded again. I think I'll send it back for this driveshaft inspection. I would reckon the bike has about 50,000kms on it already (odometer still not turning, still stuck at 37,043), so it may be due for a check, just in case Smile

How common is the rubber insert failing?

Just finished putting the bike back together after the box failure, gently bedding the new rear pads with the bike on the stand before I tried to take it for a ride and I stopped the rear wheel!
In ANY gear engine off and I can turn the rear wheel by hand.
Releasing the bevel/swing arm seal and there's smoke!

Is it likely the insert sheared when the box locked solid at speed to save further damage?
