My 93 LT has passed all it's electrical weirdness gallstones and has been the icon of K-Bike for the first 1k miles of the season. Mr. Complacent hopped off it one day after gluiding into my parking spot on the kill switch. By the time she's cooled off and I'm ready to put the cover on her, I see I left the ignition switch on -- an ALMOST dead bat. DAMN !!!! So I immediatly hook up the trickle charger and leave the beast be. I think within 4-6 hours, everything back up to tempo and she fired without hesitation.
My next ride, I have the proverbial flashing ABS signals. It's only my 2nd season with this gal, and Beemers, and I think I had one that cleared all unto itself. This flasher is hanging around. Several trips around town and down the roads, and she just doesn't clear on her own.
Enter Dr. Google.
I find this old spot that tells me if you run the bat down with kill swith off, and ignition swith on, it toasts the ABS box. I see discussion about "Code 7"; a guy in Japan that fixes them for 2 c-notes USD, how to find them on e-bay, etc.
Before I map a course, I have to ping the brains of this web-site ........ any clues? Did I cook my box by a relatively simple mistake? Is such a critical piece of electronics vulnerable to such a simple screw up ? Do I have options?
maybe a complete powerdown/reboot via bat removal?
You folks got all the K-Bike brains, I need you to share ....
All my thanks in advance........ |

Sounds like you just have either a weak battery or a persistent fault, neither is a big deal. I've left the ignition on/kill off several times without any ill effect other than a pissed off battery - now I leave the switch alone and just use the ignition.
TEST - If you ride for a bit and then stop the bike with key out for few minutes, then start it up again does the ABS still fault?
If no, you need to replace the battery or maybe try one of the new de-sulphating battery chargers.
If yes, you possibly have a weak battery or a persistent fault, or something more nefarious.
TEST - place a multimeter across the battery with everything shut off and key out, what is the voltage reading?
Is the voltage is 12.4+ (that right?)
If no, battery and or charging system is going south.
If yes, clear the ABS fault.
Next step - clear the ABS Fault. Mick McKinnon had a great post here, ignore the motronic and ABD-II stuff (you have ABS-1 with the '93, right?) Basically you will need a 2' length of 16g or so wire (you can get fancy and tin one end and put an alligator clip on the other.)
If the battery is fine and the ABS reset clears the fault and the fault stays gone - awesome. If not, stop by Radio Shack and pick up one of these 12v LED testers and follow Mick's instructions for pulling the ABS-1 codes, you'll have a better idea what is going on then.
