Confused Confused Confused

Good evening all...

Just another question.... Does anyone know what is the function of the two capped fittings on the top of the ABS-ll modulator ??? Could they be bleeders ??? or do they serve some other function ? When the cap is removed they appear to be for use with fluid, and I was wondering if the Modulators could be bled using these fittings ??? Any ideas ?? I currently have a Code=7 defect ( plunger error ) which the Duck believes may be a trapped air bubble..

Best regards all and Happy 4th July ! To our Canadian members, I hope Canada Day on the 1st was enjoyed by all...

Yep, they are the bleeders for the modulator - note that the front bleeder on the modulator is for the rear brake circuit, and of course vice versa.

Very Happy

G'day Rob...

Say.... do you use these to bleed the modulator in the same way as one uses the wheel cyl bleeders ?? Have you ever had to bleed your modulators, perhaps after having removed it, or serviced it ?? Clymer says absolutely NOTHING about the ABS-ll modulator and very little about the post '93 brake systems.

Thanks for the response........// Ernie-NH

I've bled my brakes after replacing the front calliper hoses which drained a lot of fluid - I did the modulator as a matter of course as I assumed it would get air in it from the draining.

Yes, the bleeder works exactly the same as those on the callipers. This is from the factory repair manual that you can get online www.rbracing-rsr.com/downloads/K1100LT_RS_Repair.pdf

Quote:
[ABS II] Bleeding pressure modulator
• Remove the left battery cover.
• Connect a vessel to the brake caliper bleed screws to trap escaping brake fluid, then open the bleed screw by half a turn.
• Maintain pressue at the handbrake lever and open the bleed screw, at the same time pulling the hand brake lever in firmly.
Caution:
Do not release the handbrake lever until the bleed screw has been closed.
• Allow the brake fluid to emerge from both brake calipers until it is clear and free from bubbles.
• Close the bleed screw while keeping the hand brake lever pulled in.

My technique is to use a piece of plastic tube which goes from the bleeder into a small container of brake fluid - that way if it sucks back, it sucks fluid not air.

Also Duck has a page that you might find useful - http://smithduck.home.comcast.net/~smithduck/bmw/tech/absbleed/absbleed.htm

Ernie, I put Speedbleeders on the calipers and the modulator which makes things pretty simple. Also use a MightyVac. Start with the modulator and then the calipers although you can just do the calipers if air in the lines is not an issue.
