Hi, Can anyone help answer a problem with my local lock smith cutting a new key. He has made 5 attempts and each time the keys work in all the locks on my K1100LT with the exception of the ignition. Is there a transponder in the key that is read by the electronics or is there something we are missing.
Regards

Do you mean you can turn the ignition key, but the bike won't start? Or can you not turn the ignition key? _________________ '93 K1100RS

It's just a key. Tell him to take a close look at the shoulder. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Is the key you are providing an original key or a copy?. That may sound a strange question, however, every time a key is copied, it gets very slightly smaller. The pins that a key lifts in an ignition switch are very precise so if the key is a copy of a copy it will not lift the pins enough to work.
This is the same for house keys.
What the locksmith needs to do, is check the depth of the cuts on the key with a micrometer and ajust his cutting machine accordingly.
I cant explain it better than that, however, many years ago, I spent some time as a locksmith.
And I never was able to pick a safe lock!!.
Cheers.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for your help, the issue was with the shoulder depth of the key. The new keys were cut from a blank the was very close to the original key dimensions but not quite close enough - all is now sorted.
Anyone know if there is a diagnostic tool available for this machine - not the hugely expensive BMW one.

I had a similar problem. Now I know where to look, I'll get the dremel out and grind a bit off, until I get it sorted. _________________ Fr Jack

I know this has been sorted and i'm probably a bit late with this comment but i've been on tour so,
You need to make sure if you buy the blanks from any aftermarket parts supplier that they are the thicker headed blank [if the folding type is to used] with the little raised roundel. The thinner headed blank without the roundel is for the earlier "R" series and the blank is not long enough. _________________ Fat Ba***d with a K1100LTse

Are you talking about the one with the gray plastic folding head? Those will work when folded over. (I have one for my LT that works fine.) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

There are two types of folding blank, one has a small blue and white roundel on and is about 7mm thick this type is the one recommended for the K series. The other type is about 4mm thick and has the logo but is just moulded in the plastic and fits the R series.
I found from experience that the blank parts were longer on the thicker key and therefore worked on all the locks on the K whereas the thinner blank wouln't work in the ignition but would operate all the other locks. _________________ Fat Ba***d with a K1100LTse
