|
|
Trouble starting my k1100lt. When I turn the ignition key all seems fine, all lights come on, fuel pump whirrs etc, however, as soon as I hit the starter button, there is a relay click, then total power loss.
After this initial attempt to start, now the same happens as soon as I turn the key. ie. the fuel pump no longer runs, and the clock dims and resets.
The clock resets to 0:00. I did initially find the battery was low on water. Topped it up, left the bike on battery charger overnight. Tried in the morning, fuel pump runs, press starter button. Nothing...Battery voltage was 12.8.
Back in the same cycle after this. Had to ride a pushy to work .
Prefer the K11 to the pushy, so any help greatly appreciated. _________________ Ken Keane

Sounds like the same problem I am having with my 1996 K1100RS, not enough battery amperage for the starter. Voltage can be fine but if the "depth" of the battery isn't there, it won't start.
How old is the battery?
If it is too old it could mean a new battery. If it is new maybe it needs a good, long ride to give it a deep charge.
Is it a short ride to work?
Sometimes short rides are not enough to deep charge a battery. _________________ "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges"!

Check at your battery terminals and grounding points to make sure everything is tight and well-connected. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Not sure how old the battery is, was in the bike when I got it a bit over a year ago. Ride to work is only 7k's, some would say I should ride the manual bike, but...
Think I will hook up the car battery when I get home (all up hill). If that starts it, I will get a new battery. _________________ Ken Keane

Will check connections, terminal ones look fine, no sign of any corrosion, and they are tight. _________________ Ken Keane

Duck makes a good point to clean the terminals and grounding points. _________________ "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges"!

Almost sounds to me like you might have a bad cell in the battery _________________ 1993 K1100LT

Thanks for the input.
Cleaned the terminals, although they looked clean to me. That did the trick, glad it was so simple. _________________ Ken Keane

Electrons are a terrible thing to waste.
Glad to hear that you got it sorted out. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
