Hate to say it but my first though is that the o-ring that seals the pickup is leaking. This will cause it to suck air instead of oil. Even at higher RPM it will still be sucking air, just that the pump has enough volume to shut of the idiot light.

From the sounds of things perhaps they sent the wrong o-ring and it is to large. That would 'splain why you had such a hard time installing it.

That’s exactly what I guessed. :nod

Hello!

That's nasty situation Confused The o-ring size is: 13.3X2.4 (in mm) inner diameter X rubber thickness. You can try to find a replacement or order OEM - the price is ~ $ 1.32 Laughing .
Have You inspected the condition of the oil pump? There is also another small o-ring. I can see metal fragments on pictures, maybe (hope not) pump inner walls are scratched.
B.TW. My friend was replacing o-ring in drive housing on his K75. The o-ring was only 0.2 mm to thick. During screws tightening rubber expanding in a grove destroyed the housing - whole final drive was to exchange (sci!).

Best regards

Ok, I've been re-replacing the fail-to-seat oil pump seal and just found the rear main and the oil/water pump seals leaking too.

Rear main

oil/water pump

Question: Should I at this point drain the water and get ready to replace the oil/water pump seal?

The rear main, I'll get to a little later.

You don't know if it's the rear main until you open it up. It could just be the clutch nut O-ring.

Ok, that makes sence.

So, what the heck!
I'm in this deep ........ again. Embarassed

And I know it's leaking and needs replacing AND I know I'll have better luck seating the o-ring.

Off goes the pump.

Here's the money shot!

Note the bowed o-ring. Crying or Very sad

Very Happy I love me some Duck (and cover, that is)

Ok, I'm done for today.

I need another O-ring for the water pump, so I'll head over to Mortons tomorrow.

Tongue or no tongue?

After the oil pump was out of the way and I had the RIGHT BMW o-ring, it popped right in pretty as you please.

While I was there I replaced the oil pressure plug.

Do you know that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach when you strip the threads on an engine block?

Well, when that crush washer 'crushed' it felt just like that. *shiver*

My son Space Cowboy helped me. Cool

Bent spring, dying seat or bent rod? Guessing only way to really check will be get some compressors and remove the spring and then have a look?

(Would offer the spare here but it hasn't seen ANY movement for 6yrs so god knows what it's be like!)

Max

PS - like the wrench, just remember it's not guaranteed accurate just cos it's digital!

SNAPON!! V.Nice

Gwen,

I'm with Max and I take his door #3 (bent shock rod). OUCH.

You probably have others around, but if you need an OEM p.o.s. BMW shock, I happen to have one in the garage. But yours might be a shorter version of stock?

John

As far as we can tell, it's not the rear main seal. I looks, feels, and smells like trans fluid/gear oil. Trans input shaft seal has been replaced. Might as well do the rear main while I'm here.
