its a 1992 k1100lt. it was standing for two years. the battery was not holding a charge when i tried to start it so the starter relay received the good news.i changed the oil,new battery and it runs as per normal but now the fan when it kicks in doesnt appear to be cooling the engine cos the warning light on the dash appears and there is serious gurgling noises from the cooling system. turning off the ignition stops the fan, the temperature guage appears to be erratic. I fear I may have damaged the motronic /fan control but that doesnt explain why the fan isnt cooling down the engine...i may as well change the coolant and consider the temperature sensor...but am i missing something? _________________ slyderx

There's two temp sensors:
One on the water pump that feeds the gauge.
Another one on the front of the head where the water exits. That one feeds the Motronic. If it's wire is chafed and shorting to ground then that will turn the fan and engine temp light on. Or it could be a flaky sensor. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

slyderx - if you're hearing gurgling noises, the system might be low on coolant. Check the bottle (I think it's under the seat on that model), if it's empty or very low, you'll likely want to remove the gas tank and make sure the radiator is full.
If the bike was sitting for that long, and you don't know when the coolant was changed last, you might want to renew it. _________________ Jim

Check both the wires from the sensor and also the blue/yellow one from the Moronic to the relay. Either of those grounding would turn the fan on. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Get a new radiator cap as well, it is a key part of the cooling system and they go bad every 5 or 6 years. _________________

I've never had the K at idle on the side stand. The oil disappears from the sight glass at idle on the center stand. _________________ Jim

doh meant mainstand anyway thanks for that..( there was a return of oil).i've decided to park that concern because draining and refilling the cooling system seem to have to have cured the overheating. Thanks everyone for responding to my dim and vague queries _________________ slyderx

I've had a few K bikes and the only one that ever had a bad radiator cap seal was a 93 with 118k on it. YMMV. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
