Heard that the whales are numbering 13 000 this year up in Hervey Bay.
We see em go past up to Hervey and on the return leg to Antarctica .

Jim according to Garynali's reading of the manual you are within normal limits.
You use a litre (a quart) every 1000 miles (1600 km) and the limit is 1.5 litres per 1000 km.
That means the limit is a quart each 600 miles, so you are well within accepted limits.
My take on the oil burning is that, a film of oil is left on the barrels and this prolongs the life of the motor at the small cost of some oil.

That's what I gathered, too. I also conclude that if I ride slow in cold weather, I'll consume less oil. _________________ 2000 R1100RT

Excellent extrapolation of the basic data, have you considered politics??
Serious now, I use castrol magnatech 20W40 and change it at 10k. No problems to date and summer temps just cause it to use a little more on a long run. I can't see anyone in this post who's using more than the factory max, most much less.

I have never used the Mobil 1 15w50 Extended Life. When it was available, I had plenty of the 15w50 I had purchased before the Extended Life became available, and now it is gone. Still, I changed the "normal" 15w50 at 10k miles or once per year. I still maintain that oil change interval with my K75 bikes, and I still use Mobil 1 15w50. _________________ Ride Safe,

Ok nice to see all the documented OIL loss ...
but here is a couple of Facts.
Any internal combustion engine will burn some oil.. it is just a question of how much and how long it will take.. jet engines consume oil.. beacuse the oil acts a fluid seal and bearing; uber tight tolerances.. you can not have metal on metal contact. so as the engine expands and contracts oil will seep in and out and round seals in the combustion chamber as the metal expands and contracts.
Now for the Bricks. Any Flat layout style engine will have oil creep into a combustion chamber Via the valves. My Subi and 911's will burn oil when you park the car.. oil collects on the bottom half of the cyclinder sleve and when you start it cold all the oil is compressed and poof... but you will never see at the exhaust because the amount is minimal. to slow the rate down on the Bricks, always park on the center stand if you are going to be parked for more that 1 hour .. any duration on the sidestand will allow oil collection to occure in and around the head.
Now you also have garvational pull going into and outta long sweeping curves or steep lean angles. this loss will be more sever in countries like Brittan were you drive on the other side of the road.
their is a GM TSB about the FWD Impalas Police cruisers. during high speed chases it was noted that during prolonged turns the Tranny would oil away from the torque converter pick up port and cause the loss of power .

Mine burns about a quart every 5,000 miles or so, quite reasonable in my book. I find I have to add about a 1/4 quart about three times year, with only doing about 3,000 miles year.
I run Mobil1 15-50 synthetic (red cap) and change it about once a year and half or so, as my limited annual mileage isn't that great.
I had to add some today as a matter of fact, the level had reached the lower part of the sight glass.
Love that 5 quart bottle, enough for an oil change and then enough left over for tops offs until the next change.

I love(d) the 5 qt. bottle, too. A few months ago I was told at my local Wal-Mart that it was being discontinued. It has been, at least here. It is still available in the qt. bottle, albeit at a price of over $6 per qt. So if you can still buy the 5 qt. bottle, I would advise doing so and soon! _________________ Ride Safe,

Got fancy and used Amsoil 20/50 motorcycle oil and burned a lot more oil. 1qt per 1K.
Went back to Castrol 20/50 4T, result- 1qt per 2K.
