Had to ride 350 miles of I-90 today - 200 of which were triple digits Fahrenheit. The K-heater was near the top of its comfort zone. Current conditions as of this post:

Just a whisker below 110° F.

I drenched my T-shirt in cold water and put the mesh jacket back on when I stopped for fuel. It was dry in twenty miles.

By the time I got to Rapid City the temp had dropped to 102° F, which felt downright chilly.

Should a properly tuned and maintained K run that hot at speed?
I mean even at 105 degrees?

Would running the fan on manual help at all?

Just curious.

First, it was 109° F.

Second, I'm not sure. Anyone else have any photos of their K-heater's thermostat while running 5500 rpms at triple digits ambient?

When running at 90° F ambient, the thermostat is a full notch lower on mine.

Yeah, full click lower on the guage at 90 degrees seems right.

I guess I just did not think the system was that near the edge.

Buy yourself one of the above cooling vests. I've bought several and handed them out to friends down here in Fort Stinkin' Desert Texas. The vest really works well to help keep you cool while riding in the heat.

A buddy and I did a bit under 300 miles yesterday sight-seeing on some Texas Hill Country back roads. Heat index was 107f. Wearing the cooling vests allowed us to wear our armored jackets and -still- feel comfortable.

Klinker, I lived around Sioux Falls for a lot of years some time ago. Where abouts are you located?

I'll have to look through the pix - I know I have some from the San Diego trip that show the temp on the ChargeX at 113 degrees F - but I don't think I snapped any of the temp gauge at the same time. If I recall correctly, it was either in the center or just a little above. Maybe the RS bikes run a little hotter.

Definitely getting one of the vests - thanks for the link!

We met up Saturday at 8 a.m. Early riding temps were fine for some time, of course. Around noon, low 90f, I pulled out the two cooling vests, and we put them on under our jackets. Both vests were in a saddlebag inside a collapsible cooler with ice and drinking water. I soaked them both earlier -- they'll weight a few pounds when hydrated and will last a couple of days.

(Mr. Wizard here)....The ribbed vests have the same water absorbing crystals they've been putting in diapers -- it's a real stable synthetic, hydrophilic polymer. Can hold/absorb up to two hundred times its own weight in water.

No pics of the temp gauge, but we have had a few days of those ambient temps. Mine tends to run between 1/2 and 3/4 of the range at highway speeds depending on the amount of traffic. If the airflow is disturbed by a lot of traffic (even if speed is high) the temp seems to rise quite a bit.

Sioux Falls on most weekends, Rapid City during week, I-90 on Friday and Sunday afternoons.

our summer will soon kick in, last year i found the best solution to running hot. Leave the lower half af the fairing in the garage.
The bike runs cooler and so do I.

I did tour Florida & Georgia one July & it was too hot tbh, I kept stopping at stores with air-con & standing there for half an hour. (Looks like there's no pleasing me eh !! ) Embarassed

Sounds like you really put on the miles then. I remember there could be some nasty thunderstorms rolling in up there, moreso than down here in Texas.

I lived in Renner for a bit. Then we owned a bookstore down in Vermillion, SD for a number of years. Have been back in Texas since '91.
I bought a '78 R100/7 while in SD back in '88. Still have, with now having 100k miles on it. It still runs like a top. I sure loved to ride the south eastern SD backroads.
