on monday i noticed that my kick-stand has a decent amount of play in it. it can move in and out from the bike (transverse to the main axis of the bike) quite a bit i think. i would say at the pad it is about 2 inches of movement, maybe slightly more. i got under the bike and tightened up the bolt that fastens it to the pivot, but that hasn't really solved the condition. is this normal? if not, what can be done other than taking the stand off and closing the distance between the prongs?

i think getting this solved will fix an intermittent shut off problem the bike has been experiencing because when the kick stand is put back up it will not always seat in the rubber boot. because of this i suspect the shut off switch may occasionally open or close.

You will always have a slight amount of movement there. I am guessing that yours is like mine was, plain old worn out. I took mine off over the winter and tore it apart. The pivot bolt and the holes were worn badly. I set the bracket up on a vertical mill and opened up the holes enough to clean up and then bushed them back to fit the bolt.

I took it off and pinched the forks. It helped. I also straightened the bend in the kickstand a little hoping it would lean over so far. It did help some with the lean but I wouldn't recommend messing with the kickstand, just pinch the forks.

Pinching the forks isn't best, that only puts off the inevitable & only 1/2 improves things neither is it the bolt, although that Jeff will help. IMNSHO the best way is shimming, as the weight / wear is on the faces of the forks & the stand boss. In other words, stuff in 1 or 2 suitable thickness mudflap (fender) washers.

I did not have thrust issues on mine. It was all in the diameters. I did forget to mention that I trued up the bolt and made the bushings to fit. Also added grease channels.

jeff, what bushings did you use and where might i find them? i really know nothing about those things.

I made them to suite from some alloy steel. I bored the minimum from the stand and turned the bolt to just clean up. I wanted to keep as much of the original metal as I could.

Most poeple probably don't have a machine shop but if you ask around you can probably find someone local that has a hobby mill and lathe and would machine the parts for a reasonable cost. You might even find a local trade school or tech college that would have at it for you.

SC, you could just also replace the worn bolt and the bushing and should be ok too.
I have had to replace them on one of my bikes as well.
