Another fantastic thread, (Thanks for the link Gwen, hope I'm not being too familiar! )
I have some points I'd like to raise:
#1. It must be annoying (probably for your date ) that you decide to do one last job just as you are about to leave for a night out ! | Shoganai wrote: |

#2. You say you're a nurse, maybe you could start a specific "Shoganai's Medical Advice" thread, offing advice on prevention & cures for the DIY mechanic. (I.E. What to do if you should chop off your thumb in your son's motorbike drive chain ! ) _________________ "A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing."

Shogs,
I tried EVERYTHING!. I probably spent 3 hours fiddling. Pulled the alternator and was done in no time. Just pull the alternator and save yourself the grief.

how I modified my abs/batt rack after a long struggle with starter removal/installation - won't help with alternator removals however.

In my panic yesterday, I posted this in the wrong thread.
Thank you for this mod. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

Good morning Gwen.....
Great article in this months Airhead magazine ( for owners of older R airheads ) concerning the demise of BMW as a company that considered "the owner/rider/mechanic" and the problems they face due to BMW engineering's lack of consideration ! Point being that where once a BMW machine could be repaired 'on the road' or at home using the tool kit provided and the appropriate or improvised spare parts, that has long since not been the case. BMW, from amongst all others, was once respected for its forethought in this regard when designing its world famous bikes, has woefully joined all the others ( Jap, English, American ) as being overly high tech, and nearly impossible to either diagnose or repair... If you'd like, I can copy and send you the article... your battle with the alternator is good example of what the article alludes to.
Best regards and good luck with the "whore"....// Ernie-NH _________________ AMA,, American Deaf Bikers

It gets worse I was reading in a car mag. that some of the new BMW cars don't have dipsticks. BMW says that the proper way to check the oil level is to take it to your dealer. The tech will drain the sump and the measure the oil and reinstall it. Go figure.
While new to the K's I found the bike to be relatively easy to work on. I kind of like that. Granted I have not taken on a project like Gwen has so I may change my mind in the future. |

Gwen,
Can't quite tell from the pictures- didn't study them too closely- how did you manage the trans removal with the ABS II in the way? That has the be a pain. Last year when I did my clutch, having a '93 RS (ABS I, as you know but some other newbys might not) made it much easier.
If I were to ever do another brick- never say never- I would do ABS I or ABS NONE (I did like Audi's simple bike) _________________ John & Cathy
