Supercat - thanks! I called to check coverage - my policy expired in June.

It does cover 100 miles towing, fluids, and batteries - and it's only $26.00 a year.

Don't you have to join BMWMOA to get this rate? ($40.00 year)

I'm a lifetime member of MOA. The road service is an add on. Platinum road service is $130.00 for 5 years for members.

Unless I'm mistaken, the MOA is not offering lifetime memberships anymore.
The last time I looked into it the lifetime wasn't an option for new members.

No, they're not - they dropped that in '08 - and I think it was getting a bit pricey then.

probably still cheaper than (assuming you start at 40 and ride until your 75) 35 x $40 = $1400. i thought about getting the 3yr membership this time but decided against it as i really don't know what will happen within the next month let alone 3 years!

Epilogue:

First thing Monday morning I took it into the auto shop. They only had a wheel holder for cars so the guy did it by hand. $15.

The tire is getting old though so I plan to replace it. It looked pretty easy to do by hand so I think I'll try mounting it myself.

Yes, I probably could've plugged it myself since I had a repair kit with me and been OK but I had about 550 miles to go at 80mph and I did have much more peace of mind with the tire being patched internally.

A little update for those who have Progressive Roadside Assistance:

What is covered:

Either 15 miles or to the nearest qualified repair facility. Since it was 31 miles the towing operator charged me $48 for the 16 miles. I called Progressive today and all I have to do is send in my receipt with an explanation to get reimbursed.

This means that if something BMW had gone wrong and not just a tire then the coverage would covered me being towed to Big Sky Missoula.

SC,
I re-upped with MOA this year, without owning a BMW. If you ride ANYTHING, the anonymous book is worth it alone.

I've been using rope plugs for 30 years. Done properly, you can get 5000 miles plus off a plug that fixed a hole like you had.

And internal patch is definitely a superior fix, though. But you can plug and pump without calling for a tow. If you carry the appropriate repair items. Which in this case would be a plug kit and a 12v pump.

I didn't get the towing with my Progressive policy (well, I did, but only for the truck). I get towing with my AMA membership. It's only good for 35 miles, though. Sounds like Progressive's is better. Even if you have to front the cash for anything over 15 miles.

Glad you got it taken care of.

Enjoy the ride!

Yeah, I did some poking around and it seems as though Safety Seal makes the best worm ones. Supposedly the mushroom plug type ones can get cut up by the steel radial belts after only a few miles and then fail.

I've got a CO2 filler with several cartridges as well as a Slime pump. Next time I'll have fresh Safety Seals with me and do my own repair on the road and then get it internally patched down the road just for peace of mind.
