Hello (1993 K1100LT, 59K), I've just replaced the blown bulbs in my instruments & fixed my faulty screen,re assembled it all, everything has been working perfectly then today I start it up & the tacho ain't working.(Just like that)
It hadn't shown any signs of failure the last time I ran it, just nothing today. What are the common reasons for failure on K tachos, will it mean stripping everything down again !?
I might just have to live with it for abit.

Not necessarily. Is the mileage counter and the day counter still working? That would be an indication that the signal is reaching the speedo. Another indication that the signal is OK is the automatic stop of the indicators after a certain distance.
Mostly you'll find that the connector behind the right-side battery cover is dirty, sometimes the sensor. _________________ Cheers, Rene

The Speedometer works fine, & I've not noticed anything else malfunctioning, it's simply the Tacho(Rev counter)
This connector you mention, is that for the speedo or the tacho ?(rev counter) I did have the right hand side panel off to clip on the optimate the other day as I'd been fitting & testing my screen alot, maybe I did disturb something?
Unfortunately I can't check immediately as I've just departed for Milton Keynes to pick up some K1100LT bits.(I'm about half way, staying at my Mums, on her Laptop. )
If you could provide more detailed info on the connector & any other potential culprits then I can check as soon as I return home.
It would be great if it's just a dirty connector.
Thanks again for you prompt reply.
Please keep the info coming.
btw Rene, where abouts in Scotland are you ? (you say "Greetings from Scotland", I'm pretty central.) _________________ "A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing." |

When I initially fitted it I did make sure it was nicely seated before tightening the allen bolt. & everything worked perfectly when I tested them after I'd refitted the instruments & fairing etc.... but I will try & give it a push.
So where is the tacho sensor/pickup located ? _________________ "A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing." |

Hi there, the pick-up for the tacho is fitted in the final drive. Its the black thingly fitted with one allan bolt just behind the lower mount point of your rear suspension. it then goes through a connector behind the right battery cover/side panel (- two wires ;-0) to the speedo. Cheers.
PS I'm in Bridge of Weir _________________ Cheers, Rene

The tach signal comes from the Motronic. Green wire that comes into the cluster on pin 16. Comes from pin 19 on the Motronic.
On an LT the "easiest" way to get to the back of the cluster is to remove the windscreen assembly. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Maybe I disturbed it when I had the seat up? How likely (on a K of this vintage/mileage) is it to be an actual tachometer fault, are they a common weakness ?
I remember the speedo on my earlier K75S was a constant pain, it was forever cutting out, a sharp tap would get it going again, one day though I "tapped" it too hard & broke the "glass". Can't really moan as that was the only fault in 68,000 miles. _________________ "A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing." |

Here's an update.................
Returned home after a week away, (Not on the BM) Decided to have a quick look at the BM & maybe locate to tacho problem.
So without wiggling owt I simply put the key in the ignition & fired it up & everything works perfectly.(INCLUDING THE TACHOMETER !!) WTF.
So I guess it's gonna be one of those kinda problems,
I'll update this thread should there be further developments. _________________ "A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing." |
