Brake handle 2-3 pulls to firm up....after caliper rebuild?.

'97 K1100LT 18,500K (new owner)

rebuilt front calipers, new pads, bled lines etc. attached piece metal to compress brake light switch...it wasnt working correctly. (it is now)

'cleaned' rear caliper, newpads, one side was sticking, rear master cyl. guts seems ok.

custom welded footpegs lower 1.25" worked out really well, better than expected...no scrapes yet after 'trying/testing'...

back to the front master:
just cant seem to get the handle to be firm all the time...goes 'squishy' to fast i think, takes at least one or two, three pulls to firm up. (it wasn't doing this initially)

Is there some type of air trapped in the master cylinder itself? Bled lines many times (went out on gravel to get abs working few times, rode home bled lines, @ modulator then caliper)

Or have the rubber seals just been worn out? (maybe from two much bleedin!) in the master cylinder?

Before i get into that re-build, just wondering if there is a 'trick' to getting any air out of master that maybe causing this?

thanks for any help, been a real education working on this bike...as long as it keeps running good (knockin the wood) its been fun. Put over 900 miles on quickly.

Most likely you still have air in the brake lines.

Keep bleeding them and it should solve your problem.

Did you prime the master cylinder when you bled the brakes? Search here for a great thread on that, sounds like exactly what is going on.

That's not necessary. If you turn the bars to the left then any air in the master cylinder will come out of the hole to the reservoir. It may be necessary to rotate the perch on the bars a little too.

It may be that there is air caught in the "hump" from the modulator to the calipers. If you remove the caliper and fork brace with the splitter in it and hold them up then that air will go to the calipers where it can get bled out. That's how I got the air out when I built my K100RS4V many moons ago.

Put the bars to the left to raise the master cylinder as high as possible, and tie the brake lever 'on' with a luggage elastic and leave it overnight. Usually works like a dream.

'airbrakes':

"rotated" the master cylinder, all kinds of air bubbles came out...that was the problem....then as i was bleeding front lines again...noticed large amount of brake fluid on floor...traced it on up to a hose.

the brake hose from front cylinder to the metal line above engine NOW leaking, felt a noticable 'break' under sleeve.

the gremlins just keep on showing up.

The thing of rotating cylinder was paramount, the 'hole' definately was not letting air out. It should be mentioned in any 'bleeding' post to be successful.

Sounds like you may be due for some new flex lines.
They don't last forever.

May be time to look at the awesome braided steel brake line upgrade, they are not much more than replacing stock.
