From what I've been reading, that's a problem they're having, but I guess neither the floods or the occasional looters made people leave their homes. Only when authorities warned about the danger of snakes and crocodiles in flooded areas, did people gave it a second thought. Right, Drikko? _________________ Carlos

Nah the snakes and crocs aren't a major problem, being swept away and water borne disease is a bigger issue. So far at 12 or 13 people have been killed, mainly by drowning from trying to drive through floods.
BTW it's still getting worse in some areas, it aint over yet! And boy are we sick of the rain!! _________________ K1100RS '97

Well today I was truly humbled. I went to help a mate clean his flooded town house out. I can remember doing the same as a 15 year old in the 1974 floods that devastated Brisbane, but then it was exciting and an adventure. At that age you don't have an appreciation for people possessions and livelihood. The absolute devastation that the muddy river brings to a flooded house is truly incredible. I shed a tear as I walked away from helping, it is very overwhelming.
I have loaded a whole swag of pictures into Picasa for you to have a look at if you are interested, but I just want to say that the person in the Brisbane City Council that approved this development which has about 100 townhouses in it, and the developers themselves should all be shot. No doubt they are sitting in luxury somewhere enjoying the fruits of their crime.
But as others have said we aren't a poor country so these people will recover.
I have added comments in the photos here:-

Brisbane Council's rubbish disposal crews (or contractors) and the local rubbish dumps are going to be so busy for a while disposing of all the ruined stuff that people have to throw out.
The worst part is, from what we hear on the news, that all houses affected by flooding are going to need an electrical inspection by a qualified sparky before they can be used again - aside from all the other repairs that are needed.
And now it seems it is the turn of the Victorians to cop a drowning. Somehow it doesn't seem fair that we are still having a dry time down here; although I guess in a few months a lot of what is in central Qld at the moment will find its way down the Murray in our general direction. Which would probably be a good thing for the Murray River system; it's long overdue for a flush out. _________________ David, owner of:
