I went to sturgis about 11 years ago. It is an experience. Last time I thought once every 10 years is enough. I am due for a return. If you stay at a somewhat quiet campground, its not too wild. However, it was the only place I have ridden where I was more afraid of other bikers than of cars. There were so many, and a lot of them are drunk. There are some really funny guys doing wacky things and women dressed in both interesting and strange ways. We didn't hang out in Sturgis much cause it was such a zoo.
My friend and I were tickled at the opportunity to test ride out there. I rode some harleys, buells, a valkrie, superhawk and a r1100rt. The test rides were fun. We passed a ton of harleys on the way there. The way home wasn't as impressive as we had tasted better bikes than what we went there on.
He was riding a wing, I was riding my k75C. We did not get grief from any one for not being on a Harley. I remember the wind was about 40 mph from the south which was a real pain driving east. When driving north on I29 I took my K75C up to 119 indicated. Not often you get a 40 mph tailwind on a freeway without much traffic.
I think its something you should experience at least once. Be prepared for a zoo. _________________ 93 K1100LT

Been twice and stayed at quiet campgrounds both times. Learned right off to ease into town early, get over to Lazelle Street as quickly as possible, buy groceries and other, ahhh, erm, supplies, and go back to the campground to party with other like-minded folk.
Of course one stop at The Broken Spoke is mandatory and once you've done the length of Main Street, feet up, watched at every intersection by at least two LEOs, you don't ever have to do it again.
I will go again, maybe this year - who knows? - but whenever I do I'm going two weeks early to get a job at one of the quiet campgrounds and get paid for partying.
And on that run, I'll go on two wheels just as I did the previous two times. The trick is not to haul everything you need but rather to buy cheap whatever-you-need there - or near there, more likely, where the prices haven't been jacked up so much - then give it to the campground when it's time to leave, or throw it away. And of course hold off on buying T-shirts until the last weekend when they're $2-3 each instead of $20-25.
p.s. There are races at Sturgis, too, and none of them are down the middle of Main Street. _________________ Shoganai made me do it! |

Same here in the New England states. And 10 to 20x that during Laconia Bike Week and the week before. |
Yep John is right. Lots of HD's. Infact I would ride my GF's HD "she bought" Me driveing not on the back!!!! But I would get lots of "HD is the only bike to ride!" "All American bike." Ha Ha Ha I mean hysterically mind you. I worked on her HD when it had a failed oil sensor, mind you within a year of her owning it, when low and behold, the "All American bike" has many MADE IN CHINA electrical parts and sensors. I'd stick with BOSCH! |
