I see nothing in my manual to suggest otherwise, however, I pose this question to the forum -- Does the SE series with Marzocchi fork specify a different quantity of oil? I put 350cc left and 400cc right.

Thanks for helping me on this.

did u do a total rebuild, thus needing the 2 different amounts? or did you just do a drain and refill, which, IIRC uses the same amount in each fork.

This was a routine drain and refill.

I'm sure it's the other way around. If you do a total rebuild, they take the same amount - 400cc, if you drain and refill, about 50cc is caught in the left leg and won't drain out.

The Clymer's states: (page 560): K1100 models, left leg 349-351 cc (11.7-11.8 oz.), right leg 399-401 cc (13.4-13.6 oz.) for a drain and refill.

A standard drain and refill should only need the same amount in each fork, IIRC.

Scott - it's the same amount when you take the forks completely apart and that other 50 cc comes out of the left fork.

When you drain and refill, there is 50 cc that doesn't drain out of the left fork. Hope you haven't been doing it wrong...

Not to steal this thread but what type and viscosity oil is recommended in the forks?

Thanks

Bmw spec is 7.5w.

I have been using 10w for the last 2 years in both of my bikes, to lessen the chance of seals leaking, as well as a little firmer ride.

Fork oil. Some guys use ATF. ESSO Komfort...

I use fork oil 7.5W. Viscosity depends on the condition of your suspension and what kind of ride you want. When the springs on my bike were pretty much shot, I used 10W. As soon as I replaced the springs, I had to go back to 7.5W

I can't remember what BMW specifies - and I don't have a rider's manual handy...

It's either 7.5W or 10W

I found 10W to be about right. Not sure brand matters at all.

Hi,
BE CAREFUL when you change the fork oil. The drain plugs are tiny and strip easily. I do NOT use any torque wrench. The K11 (if I remember correctly) uses "O" rings as gaskets. I tighten the plugs until they are snug and then tighten a tiny bit more. It has worked for me when I had K1100LT's (10 years and 125k+ miles).

Thanks for all the information and opinions. I appreciate the responses.

350cc left and 400cc right, Silkolene synthetic 10W. Wow! The forks now work better with the rear Ohlins.

Note: O rings on the drain plugs; I had several new ones on hand and found that both plugs removed showed slight tearing/compression. Its an easy replacement IF you have them on hand.
how often are you supposed to change the oil in the forks?
Annually or every 12,000 miles according to the Inspection I and II intervals.

Once you have all the tools, oil and drain pans handy, the entire operation is about 20 to 30 minutes.
