I pulled the wheels (first time I've done it on this bike), got some new rubber put on and reinstalled the wheels.
I checked wheel spin for both front and rear and activated the brakes (with power off) to ensure they stopped the wheel. Everything looked good.
I had one problem, installing the front wheel. There was much friction on the right side pads. Once I started tightening the axle bolt, it popped into place, though. There's some slight rubbing with both sides, but it rolls, although not as freely as I would prefer.
Anyways, I went on to the rear wheel, installed that no problem.
I have everything reinstalled except the rear mudflap. Power up the bike to start it up and a single ABS light is on. Normally two are on. The left one is lit. When I put the ignition on and kill switch is off, the left abs light flashes. At no time does the right abs light come on. With ignition on and kill switch in on position (ie: won't run position), that abs light is solid.
I have no tools to get fault errors from the moronic unit. Any suggestions? It's too late to run down to the shop and have them look at it.
After four months, I really was hoping to get a ride in this weekend.
The battery was marginal since the shop failed to charge if for four months. I did put it on the charger the other night until it said it was fully charged. Other than the ABS fault, it looks healthy.
A weak battery usually results in two abs lights flashing alternately when you start the bike cold. Warm it up for 2 minutes. Power down, power up and restart the bike and the ABS inits fine. At least that's how weak batteries have always behaved for me on this bike.
This single light thing is new. I'm sure it has something to do with reinstalling the wheels.
I didn't have an ABS problem when I reinstalled the wheels on the F800GS. But then it's blowing clutches every 6000 miles on average... _________________ M N B

Occasionally I have to give my display an official thump with my finger to get the abs lamp to light too.
try that and see what happens. _________________ Ride safe.

I just skimmed the owner's manual, which is better written than the service manual, at least as far as useful info for removing and installing the wheels.
Based on a visual, it looks like the front abs sensor gap is too much (maybe 0.7-0.75). The rear wheel looks really close, but spec is 0.625mm, so it's probably pretty close.
I'm not sure how the sensor could have got that far off... _________________ M N B

When I put my axle back in I give the end bolt a good snug fit(not torqued yet) then I lightly thump the fork lowers with my rubber mallet to let them "settle" on the axle shaft. I torque the end axle bolt, then the lower fork axle clamp bolts.
I have had to adjust the abs gap 1 time after changing the tire. don't know why either but non-the less it was off. _________________ Ride safe.

I thumped the axle in with a rubber mallet. I could not remove the axle without using a socket extender and the mallet to pound on the axle. Putting an allen wrench through the other side and twisting and pulling was just too stiff. I thoroughly cleaned the axel and sprayed it with lithium grease. It went back in much easier.
But there was a thwunk as it settled in when I tightened the axel nut (not fully torqued, but tight).
This is the first time I've changed the wheel. But I was very careful to make sure it was installed and seated right. I'm thinking the shop that did it last time wasn't so careful. _________________ M N B

I'm betting you are probably right if it wan't a bmw shop, or at least a shop that has worked with them before. _________________ Ride safe.

Pulled one of the three shims (2mm, left the 1mm and 3mm in)
Tapped on the console three or four times.
ABS light work fine now. Syncs up fine. Did not test activating ABS while braking.
Taking a dinner run for a test ride and to scrub in the tires. _________________ M N B

Good you solved it. Just in case, you can read the ABS errors from the calculator (not the motronic) and reset it with no special equipment, just an analog voltmeter (with digital it is difficult to count pulses) or a 12V LED or a 5V LED with a resistor: http://www.largiader.com/abs/absfault.html _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.
