I have an early 1990's push mower (vertical Briggs) that has never had an oil change. I just add new when it is low, which is all to often. Early in it's life it tried to eat a large rock and the crank was bent. I just took a 32 oz hammer and pounded it as straight as I could. The lower seal pumps a little oil but it is still running strong.

Oil changes *ARE* overrated yet we all do them!
I don't know of anyone who had engine problems with their vehicles (cars in this case). My first car I changed oil every 3K. My 2nd car every 5K, My latest car every 7.5K.....
An engineer I worked with claims to have NEVER changed engine oil on his Toyota truck in over 70K miles. He's enough of a non-conformist that I don't think he's making up a story.
On the K1100LT I started out 10 years ago changing oil every 3K but in the last 4 years am on the annual routine with Mobil1 (I ride anywhere between 3 to 7K/yr)

Seriously though, my farm tractor calls for a fairly expensive oil change every 100 hours and a very expensive hydraulic oil change every 400 hours. Not just because of the expense, but because I hate disposing of oil that seems fine, I have my oil analyzed at Blackstone Labs. I've increased the engine oil interval to 200 hours and am still waiting after 800 hours for them to tell me the hydraulic oil has changed enough to justify a change. _________________ Jim

Removing the oil filter cover is something I do most of the time, however, I have a magnetic drain plug and every third change I remove it and collect any of the ferrous particles on it -- there always are some. New O ring for the cover and new crush washers, always; they come with the oil change kit.
For me, longevity is one of the strong points of the K1100; my '97 was retired with over 400K on it (and is now being brought back to service*). To me, the cost of oil and fuel filters are a minor issue and I only use OEM. I use Mobil 1, 15W50 and change oil and filter at factory specified intervals.
I fill the new oil filter prior to installing it with a light coat of engine oil on the filter cover seal O ring. Since the belly pan is off (K1100RS), I also check the exhaust nuts and re torque as needed. That is also a good time to check the exhaust headers for cracks.
*K bikes, IMO, absolutely hate being left unattended for more than a year or more and often such extended periods of non-use are rewarded with expensive pieces to bring them back to service. Fuel pump, injectors, batteries -- all needed to be extensively service or replaced. Some seals (crank) were seeping. The fuel pump was removed and the fuel pump screen was replaced -- it had split in two places and couldn't be salvaged. I did all this in my garage and replaced the clutch plates, lubed the splines, etc. I won't let the bike sit idle that way again. A word to the wise. _________________ 1996 K1100RS SE, K1100K, K75S, Laverda 1200

Hello!
I am performing live experiment on my engine - I do an engine flush and put a synthetic oil - all the witches says that it should leak like hell . It is 60000 miles old. Last time I have changed the oil I have put an engine flush.
Lot of strange things went out with old oil. I've filled the engine with fully synthetic Gulf 10W60. The result IMHO is ok, the oil is clear after some running, no leaks.
Good discussion about oil filters:
