k1100 driveshaft splines,lube or not ?
I am interested in opinions on this subject.
I have seen it stated,on another Forum, that the K1100 does not require to have its driveShaft spines re-lubed,though the assertion had no explanation for the statement.

The concensus is the paralevers do not need the attension needed by the earlier models.
I've got an 86' K75 and it needs the drive shaft lubing every 20,000km.
This is due to the shaft "jacking" on the shaft at the rear drive.
The tranny rear drive end dosent need the lube as often as its secured by a circlip.
The jacking on a paralever drive is dramaticly reduced so lubing isnt needed anywhere as often.
I had to repair the clutch on my K11, when it was stripped the grease on the drive shaft looked like new but from the bikes history it seems it hadnt been greased for at least 50,000km.
I expect others will be around soon with similar examples

This is my experience. I've had 2 K1100LT's, a '96 which I sold at 122k miles and a '95 which died when I hit a deer with 25k+. I had the splines (clutch and driveshaft) lubed at 32k miles on the '96. I never touched them after that and never had problems. The bike has about 150k on it now and the current owner hasn't had problems, either. I live in a hot, dry climate.
I never went into the '95 to lube splines. _________________ Ride Safe,

Spline wear is caused by splines rubbing against each other under load.
This occurs on the transmission input splines when you let the clutch out so those are much more prone to wear and require more attention to their lubrication.
On K75s and K100s, due to the design of the monolever rear end, the rear drive shaft splines would slide back and forth on the final drive splines as the suspension travelled up and down. If they were not kept lubricated then this would induce wear.
On a K1100, both the front splines of the drive shaft and the rear splines of the drive shaft are held in place by circlips insde the splines so there is at best a very minimal amount of sliding going on. Hence there isn't much wear that can occur.
However, there is still some slight sliding going on in the splines between the front and rear halves of the drive shaft. But those are pretty robust splines and won't wear near as much as the transmission input splines or the rear drive shaft splines of a K75 or K100. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks Guys thats helpful,(particularly yours FD)
Part of the reason I am interested is that I became the owner of a low mileage (35000) '93 RS,that is running wonderfully,with no apparent backlash/transmission noises and is very smooth.
Reading all the posts on spline lubes just got me wondering..... as I do not like to dismantle parts that appear to be working well,just for a" look see".

All splines should be lubed. It's the ones that slide against each other that need more attention because the sliding has the potential to cause a lot more wear and the sliding pushes the lube out - eventually. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

| I have used my LT for a lot of long distance, so I want to know the condition of the splines. At 45k and now this winter at 87k, I pulled the transmission. Splines are still good. Replaced rear main seal, trans imput seal, + rear pivot bearings. I do this because of problems I've seen. A friend has a nice low mileage RS that lost the splines in the clutch hub and before that an newer R bike with a similar problem. My son had the driveshaft on his RS shell. My old K100 lost the rear splines. Inspect and lub. |

The input shaft to the gearbox should be lubed, in the area shaft and the friction disc meets.
Because the clutch friction disc have a slight axial movement when the clutch being pulled.
Use sparingly, so it dont being thrown to the clutch friction areas.

Use liberally, but only put it on the transmission input splines. Any of it that gets pushed out of the back, due to the cltuch plate collar, will spin off harmlessly onto the bellhousing.
